327 hi performance heads on a 305
hi everyone ... great forum...
i have just baught myself a 1988 camaro with a 305 v8 manual trany. my brother in law has offered me his 327 high performance heads off his old engine.... we dont know if they will fit.... i am looking to rebuild the engine to about 300-350 hp... is this realistic ???? he has many hipo parts eg roller cam, roller rockers different rods.... not sure on the exact specs etc....
can anyone give me an idea or examples of what they are using please.... i like an engine with plenty of snap crackle and pop... in other words the lumpyer the better...
any help is much appriciated
thanks

first off get the casting number of the heads... if its a true 327 it shoudl have the fuelie heads i believe is this is the cast TAKE THEM! you can get that 305 to get to the HP you want but your goign to have to take the time and pick out the right parts... can't just buy any part put ti on and hope it works.. to get the power level you want i would say take the heads of the 327 find out what heads they are... your best bet is to find some 64cc or 58cc heads get a set of 10.5:1 flat top pistons get a cam with about a 480 lift about a 260 to 270 dur. make sure to get MATCHED springs for the cam if you have a set of roller lifters use them your goign to have to use different pushrods if you do. put the roller rockers on. also port out the heads get yourself a good intake not sure you are going to run carb or EFI if your goign to run carb then get a holley 650DP if your goign to use a roller lifter setup get a REV kit as well also get a underdrive pully set a MSD system wil also help you out. there are othet things your going to have to go to get you to where you want to be but this will get you started

Ues, they'll bolt on. Like mentioned, they may not have the right accessory holes on the ends. While they are good heads, if they are still stock, late model factory Vortec heads will out perform them. If they are fulie heads, they are made for higher RPMs that your 305 probably wont often reach.

Check the casting numbers before you go bolting them on, and if they are true 327 heads it's likely they'll perform well. A home port and polish job usually never hurts, but buying some literature on porting and polishing.
EDIT: just read another posting saying the same exact thing, i guess you see how important it is.

Dont know if this is true but someone told me one time that only 305 heads work on a 305. He stated due to valve size that they would hit the cylinder walls. Not sure the truth of this but it may be something to look into.

stock valves are 1.84/1.50s on 305s for the most part anyways.
for a performance 305 your best bet is 1.94/1.60s or 1.94/1.55s.
a lot of 350 guys put 2.02/1.60s in the heads and at that point you could start to develop some problems in reguards to clearence.

You won't run into clearance problems, but you will run into valve shrouding issues.
Same as with 1.94/1.60 valves, or 1.94/1.50 valves, or 1.84/1.50 valves.
It's a skinny bore. It shrouds valve flow, even if the valves don't hit it.
