2.8 to 3.1? Whats involved?

Hey guys, new member here. I have 92 RS with a 3.1. 70,000 miles on it that was wrecked and totalled last week. I'm buying an 89 Camaro that is VERY nice but has a tired 2.8 in it, both auto's. What problems will I have swapping in the 3.1 from the 92 RS? Oil pan? Exhaust? Most important are all the accessories and computer. Which computer to use? Anything I'm overlooking here? It HAS to pass emissions here.
Thanks.
Ron

the only difference in the two is the crank. what i would do is grab the longblock from the 3.1 (this would be heads/block/crank/pistons/rods/cam) and put the 2.8 induction and computer on it. when you do this though i suggest putting at least a new timing chain on and going through and replacing ALL gaskets.

Thanks, I didnt know they were basicly the same engine. The 3.1 only has 70,000 miles on it and has been driven by my sister and then my daughter since it was new so I dont know if I will change the timing chain, but I WILL change all the gaskets since it does have a couple of oil leaks.
Thanks again.

change the timing chain. If you've never seen an old one, the stretch will amaze you, plus it's really cheap. It will also take the slop out of the timing.

I think the 3.1 uses a knock sensor, but not sure. EGR valves are different so reuse the 2.8 one, just swap over the stalk it sits on. exhaust manifolds are the same, so exhaust is a non-issue.

Be careful of all that wonderful factory hard plastic line ou have to deal with.

Yup, pretty straight forward swap. If you jump on the v6 board you'll find out tons of info on this or the increasingly popular 3.4 swap. Even though this is the engine swap section the real experts on the V6 swaps are in v6 section.

Oh, and welcome to the board
