I think it's sweet you built a 406, good job man!

Local guy here (also on TGO, but don't recall SN) made something like 365 rwhp with a 400, AFR heads, solid roller cam, demon 4bbl, and Air Gap RPM intake.
What scares me is that it sounds tamer than my mid-14 second 350... and he runs between 12.2 and 11.9

well with the parts we are using, should run right around the 500 mark...with race gas...should put the car in the mid 11's...but i may be on the optimistic side. i guess it just all depends on traction. i have seen magazine claims of cars running 11's with only 350 rwhp, but they are at e-town which seems to be one of the better traction tracks around.

"any home built 400's out there??"
My work in progress:
'88 caprice carb ecm(police 350)
509 standard bore block
11.3:1 compression flattop silvolite pistons
w/193 heads (home ported)
l69cam, exhaust manifolds and dual snorkel
quadrajet and factory dual plane intake
can I boast 250 hp? did I mention I have an aluminum driveshaft?

Car: 89' T/A, 00' Firehawk
Engine: 406 Roller
Transmission: TH700R4 w/2800 stall
Axle/Gears: 3.23 Posi
My 406:
stock crank and rods, hyper pistons, balanced
288XR hydraulic roller cam, 288/292 236/242 @ .050, don't remember lift
protopline 220cc heads, air gap intake, 1 3/4 headers, 750 holley
estimated around 500 hp
the car ran 7.8's in the 1/8 in radial tires with no suspension work or tuning, and with the second ring installed upside down. Hooked up with good compression it should have ran mid 7's or better.
I was going to get rid of this engine but decided to keep it. I love this engine.

do you guys with 406's have any trouble with it hitting the stock hood, or are you running an aftermarket hood?

Mine made 543hp on the dyno.My only reccomendation to you is to go for a larger runner size.195cc is big,but these large bore motors like a 215-230cc range. If it were mine, and I was shelling out the cash for AFRs,I'd go for the 220s.
As far as hood clearance,a 400 block has the same external dimensions as any smallblock,so it's still dependant on your intake/carb combo.

well the heads were just available for pretty cheap. my father in law is doing the build in his shop. he had them so we'll use them. should be a pretty streetable combination. the cam lift is .510 @50 and duration is 234/240 @ 50...so the flow numbers are good at .500 and .400 lift. which is as high as the cam is. if i am not happy with them, i might step up to the 210/215 cc range later.

well as soon as mine is built it will be eng dyno'd....so i'll be sure to post some numbers. i am curious my self to see exactly what hp we can make with these 190's. they are the heads the afr 195 replaced...but both have pretty identical flow numbers. so if i can only manage 400's, i'll be saving for the 210-220 size afr's.
