305 carb to 350 carb
original 305 carb computor controlled to some extent, to a 1992 caprice 350, some one has installed a cheap high rise and it has
a q jet on it, assume it is somewhat computer controlled. Pulled vale covers off and found a disgusting amount of sluge an carbon buid up. I am going to get the block vatted and see what I have to work with. Oh the car is a 86 trans am. what would be some good part options cam, heads, intake and carb.Lets say about $800 bucks or so. I presume to heads are 194 's. Do I need to stay with computor controlled. Loking for about 300 hp.

$800 Won't Go Too Far
philllk,
My son and I are currently doing a 305 to 350 swap. The inside of the 350 sounds like yours. You might want to start a plan of the things you've GOT to have to make the swap and see what's left over. Since we've currently doing the same type swap you might consider these numbers to be pretty good.
This is probably a pretty good estimate of SOME of the things you probably shouldn't skip. This also ASSUMES the machine shop doesn't find ANYTHING wrong.
Tank the Block and Heads $100 (+/-)
Professional Inspection $100 (+/-)
Cylinder Hone $50 (+/-)
Complete Gasket Set $60 (+/-)
Main Bearings $30 (+/-)
Rod Bearings $30 (+/-)
Rings $30 (+/-)
Oil Pump $20 (+/-)
Timing Set $30 (+/-)
Cam Lifter Set $150 (+/-) (Mild Perfromance Computer Compatible)
VARIOUS STUFF (i.e. Oil, Filters, Paint, Degreaser, Rags, Carb Cleaner, Fuel Lines & Clamps, Plugs, Plug Wires, Dist Cap & Rotor, New Belt(s), Gatorade, Wire, Tools you break, etc, etc. etc.) $200 (the little crap kills ya')
Total so far $800 (+/-) ... You haven't paid for anything performance or any additional repair(s) that might be needed; head work, boring, pistons, crank grinding, Intake manifold, Headers, Carb........
IMPO (In My Personal Opinion) IF you have to make the engine swap NOW and your budget is only $800.... DO NOT BUY A SINGLE PERFORMANCE PART until you have the block rebuilt and ready to install.
FWIW (For What It's Worth) My son and I are using a stock aluminum manifold from a Z-28 (J.Yard $20) and a stock Computer Controlled Carb from a J.Yard (Hopefully, about $30 + a $30 rebuild kit)
You can always replace the Manifold, Carb and other things later but you need a GOOD block to build on!
Sincerely,
Kurt
