Sounds taylor made for http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...id=123&pid=110

A bit of advice: Get a car that originally had a V8/manual. Even if it doesn't have the engine/tranny anymore, it'll save major headaches.

Car: 88 Camaro SC
Engine: SFI'd 350
Transmission: TKO 500
Axle/Gears: 9-bolt w/ 3.23's
Different intake bolt pattern and the internally balanced crank + two piece rear main seal, not to mention the older style valve covers with the cork seals. No biggie but they dont seal as well as the newer stuff. After I put mine in the valve covers leaked after a week and the RMS dribbles a little bit. Youll have to use an old style intake and drill & tap a hole in the pass. head if your using a serp. belt. Its also weak. I put a slightly better cam which made it feel alot better. Gives the illusion that its fast since it has alot of torque. If you can, get a better engine to start with. If you dont mind used you could get a vortec or an L98 with relatively low miles. The goodwrench will be a letdown since it doesnt make much power with the crappy heads and cam.

EDIT: youll need an older style intake, flywheel, and a balancer with the timing mark off to the side to use this motor. You can use a newer one but youll need another timing chain cover with the timing pointer in the center. I think you may have to since the timing pointer thats off to the side is blocked from view with a v-belt system. Theyre commonly available parts.

Re-EDIT: Server chopped off part of the post

The only thing that would have to be changed to get that engine in an '86 would be the flexplate (flywheel if manual).

If you want to build a "race" car, that Goodwrench 350 isn't the right place to start. Period. It's doing fine in my fullsize '84 van that we use to tow the horse trailer, however.

If you want an LG4 to go faster, you need to fix the air cleaner, exhaust (all of it), cam, and heads - in that order. The Goodwrench 350 addresses none of those areas - it just adds 45 more cubic inches that try to breathe through those restrictions.

thanks for all the info guys..how much (logically)will i end up spending getting an LG4 to about 220-240 hp? more then say...2500? because if it is then i could get the 350 which starts off with 250 with no modds for $13-1800. sorry for being dumb guys but i'm new 2 the idea of engines swaps, i just really started looking into it because i'll gain access to a garage within the next year and i'll finaly have a place 2 lower and really make some decent power...alot better then the gravel drivway i have now!

Assuming emissions-legal is required:

Exhaust: Hooker 2055 headers, ~$375 (add about $150 for coated). Catco direct-fit TPI single cat, $120. Cat-back, $250-$500.

Air cleaner: Dual snorkel w/scoops & hoses, ~$150-$200 (used, TGO classifieds or ebay).

Cam: Crane Compucam, lifters, timing set, ~$200.

Heads: Ported, 1.94" intake valves, springs to match the cam, screw-in rocker studs, guides cut for positive stem seals, ~$500-$800, depending upon how much you do yourself and how much work the heads need (guides, for instance).

That'll get you in the 275-300 gross flywheel HP range easy in a 305. My combo computes to about 250 RWHP. If you get a 350, of the above you'll need to do the exhaust, air cleaner, cam, and heads (you see what I'm getting at here?). If your 305 needs bottom end work (rings, bearings, pistons, etc.), don't bother - get a 350 core and work it over. Same parts (assuming decent heads, not 76cc chamber smogger 882 castings, for instance) will yield 350-375 GFHP.

You also have to figure on upgrades to the rest of the car: Subframe connectors, higher stall torque converter if auto, etc.

Stock 305 heads are 58cc. It would be good to get the casting #'s, though, because you don't want LO3 TBI swirlport 305 heads.

58cc.

Working over your existing would be fine. They're good heads to work with.
