Quick Question...

I have a stock 'glass Z28 hood, and I am going to be putting a new intake on the motor soon.

Thing is, this intake is about 1" taller than the factory aluminum 4bbl intake, AND it will have an adapter plate on top of that too (so I can use my Qjet on a square-bore manifold) and that adds another 3/4" to an inch to the intake.

It will have a Qjet 4bbl on top, and an L69 air cleaner on top of the carb.

Question: Will all this fit under the stock hood? Like I said, its a factory Z28 hood, the '83 fibreglass one.

sounds like it might hit but I can say for sure, cause the 83 hood has less clearence then the 85+ IROC/Z28 hood.

Adam, I fit an RPM Air-Gap + Demon DP under my stock firebird hood. It'll likely work for you - just maybe not with that air cleaner assembly.

Well, that Air Gap is somewhat taller than what I have (about 3/4") so If it worked for you, it might for me.

The L69 air cleaner is pretty low though... why do you say it may be too high?

Well, I am using a 2 1/4" K&N. That gives me a bit of extra height (but I don't know if it'll flow enough). Doesn't the L69 air cleaner fit a 3"? With a drop base+open element housing you can use less than a 3" filter if need be. Are you using a Torker?

Its is a drop base, and IIRC, it does use a 3" filter. And yes on the Torker

Adam - I have a "Crosswind" intake (same as RPM Airgap), Demon carb with a 1/2" wooden spacer to boot!

Believe it or not, it all fit under my stock fiberglass '83Z hood, if you want to compare. That's using a drop base air cleaner I should add....

Thanks Confused1, just what I wanted to hear

I know that Crosswind intake is a least as tall as my Torker, if not taller, so I think I'll be ok.

BWT - was that with your L69 air cleaner?

Unfortunatley NOT - My L69 air cleaner won't fit over the bowls of my Demon, so it's sitting on a shelf and I'm running a cheap Mr. Gasket drop base open element..... I'll adapt it somehow. Looking for another L69 base, and my cheap Mr. Gasket base.......Hmmmmm.....

I also have an old Torker II intake, and I think the Air Gap is taller, so you should be fine!

adam, my Holley contender with a 800 holley wont even come close to fitting. Had to get a 4" cowel hood to run a decent air cleaner,,,wich is vital

Well, the way I think this is gonna go (if my Ebay auction goes how I want it to) I'll have a Holley double pumper bolted to the Torker, so I won't likely need the spacer.

Does this setup have a chance in hell to fit?

The ONLY reason I run a spacer is to screw in a low profile vacuum fitting under the rear of the carb for the brake booster.

The L69 air cleaner won't fit over a Holley or Demon carb. Bowls are in the way.

The bowls themselves, or those two screws that poke up about 1/4"?

No big deal if I can't use my L69 air cleaner. I'll just get a low-slung open element. I don't have the colt air ducts for the L69 peice anyway, so I won't be losing much.

The carb looks the same, but your intake looks quite a bit taller than mine. I guess we'll just have to see what happens. I doubt I'll have distributor clearance problems, so just a low rise air cleaner will likely do the trick.

BTW - good luck with the back surgery

Adam - I wish it were only the bowl adjustment screws in the way!! The whole contour of the L69 base is all wrong compared to the Q-jet is goes over.

Riley - Back problems suck...my back has seen better days too. Good luck with the surgery - hope it helps!!

Ok, so I'll just get a cheapo open element for now then. They are cheap enough where I work (about $10).

I doubt I'd be losing anything by going open element anyway... I dont have any scoops on the L69 'cleaner anyway.
