89 Firebird Formula about to get new life!

Well, it's finally official: Monday (June 5th) the old TPI engine with 160k miles is coming out. She's had a good run, but she's old and tired.

But the GOOD news is what is going to be taking it's place: A 2001 LS1 engine with only 18,000 miles on it. I've also got a T56 6-speed from a 99 T/A with 27k miles to mate up with it.

I've been preparing for this swap and accumulating parts for literally months. Since I'm relatively ignorant in the ways of wrenching (learning fast, though!), I've been waiting for the local shop to have time for the swap. Looking like it's gonna be forever, though - they are short handed, over booked, and say it'll be the end of the year before we realistically finish this project.

SO, I found a couple of girls in town who also work on cars; Matter of fact, they do ONLY F-BODIES! :hail:

So, as I said, Monday is the day......................

I am still looking at some things, but I've accumulated the vast majority of the parts I'm going to need.

When this swap is done, I have a 91 Camaro RS and a 99 LS1/T56 combo sitting, waiting to be done next. It's a long story why I ended up with TWO projects, but suffice to say that I will probably be selling the Camaro when it is done. Unlike the Firebird, which already turns heads with its looks, this Camaro is going to be one hell of a sleeper.

I'll update this thread as the progress commences................

Not really sure yet, it will largely dependent on how much I actually put into it. To give you a rough idea, let's say somewhere in the neighborhood of $11,000 - $14,000. That's roughly about what I expect to have into it by the time it's done.

When I get a chance, I'll jot down everything I've already acquired that I'll be putting into the swap. For now, here is the "short" list:

Most bolt-on mods, LS6/Z06 Intake, Cam from a 2002 Z06 Corvette, Ported heads, 9" or 12-bolt rear, custom wiring harness, T56 6-speed transmission, etc. (These are mostly all parts that I already have, just waiting to be put on).

It's gonna be sweet, basically at around the Z06 Corvette level of power, perhaps a little bit more. (BUT - for a FRACTION of the cost, and in an F-body!)

If I could afford to keep both cars, I would - but I've got too much tied up, and will have to sell the Camaro. (Even more going into the Firebird, as that is getting a little more performance, and is being set up to pass CA emmissions, since I'll be moving there in the next couple of years!)

Any way you look at it, BOTH of these cars will be SWEET!

I don't have any pics of the Camaro yet, but I'll try to get some and put them up sometime next week.

Watch for a new thread on it, as well. We'll probably be starting on the Camaro while the Firebird is at the body shop having the surface rust removed and being primed for painting.

THE ENGINE IS OUT!!

We didn't get it out until today (was supposed to be Monday), but it is out now, nonetheless.

Next up is a front-end rebuild, then it's off to the bodyshop for engine bay prep/paint, and sanding/repair/priming of the rest of the body.

I also bought a used 12-bolt today. Doing it right the first time on this one!

Pictures coming soon............
