Engine cleanup over the winter, tips?

Hey guys, im taking the engine and tranny out of my car over the winter and im just wondering what i should be tuning up or replacing or whatever. Im changing some gaskets and seals, painting the block, and just doing some check ups. Anything else that should be done? Anyone ever just taken thier engine out and fixed it up a bit?

Thanks!
Happy New Year everyone!

woah, that sounds kinda like what im doing.

I been cleanin an engine to go into my trans am. Im using spray on engine cleaner and a lil wire brush that looks like a toothbrush. Since the hose is frozen im using buckets of hot tap water to rinse it.

The winter weather presents some unique challenges.
If i can im going to bring the engine inside to paint it.

You guys pullled your motors just to do cleanup etc??????? Now that is what I call dedication........ Or, is it "boredom"?????? LOL

I am happy to see folks that are so motivated to make thier cars more than just a "transportation tool"....

Have fun guys.

i pull my engine every winter, just to check things over, and just to clean everything up. i always replace hoses, gaskets, and a basic tuneup, and anything major that is a problem.

ditto on pulling the motor every year to check it out....

it's what racers call "rebuilding" time....if the motor lasted all season then it's time to really check it out for sure. There's been winter projects for me every year in the quest to go faster and learn more.

Do i need to take the intake manifold or the distributor out to pull the motor? and is it easier to take the tranny out with it rather then unbolting it then just pulling the block?

i never take the intake off when i pull the engine. but i always take the distributor out. with a t5, i always pull the tranny, and leave the bellhousing attached. but you can pull the tranny with the engine also.

i also chase all the threaded holes in the engine and heads when i pull the engine. just to make sure the bolts go in easy, and without debris in the holes

That is a pretty greasy lookin engine you got there. What are you going to do to it? just clean it up or add some performance stuff to it.

Can i use one of the bolts that holds the waterpump on to lift the engine out. I mean to hook the chain to it?

Don't forget to clean up the engine compartment, not just the engine. Spend a weekend cleaning and painting everything under the hood so when you put the engine back in- it all looks like new.
