the wankel design got brought out by mazda
also, the chief engineer of the vette changed in the mid 70's, and the new one (Dave McLellan) decided a more traditional vette would be more apropriate (thank ***)

I don't think mazda just flat out bought the design
many ppl paid for use of the rotary motor including benz, rolls, chevy. but I think quite a few and almost all major manufacs had a piece in it
but only masda was really able to get it to run without the smoke which NSU didn't figure out, run reliable which a few figured, and not be a gas hog which many didn't figure out.
and once the oil crisis hit since the rotary motor was called a gas guzzler it was thrown away by many manufacs
a lot of them though where using a different port design which is nasty for gas milage but if done right out of 1.3L can net you a little over 300hp N/A

There was an assembly line built and they actually ran 4 engines down the assembly line, in Dayton OH. It took alot of reworking to get them to live in the test vehicles, but just at the time when they thought they had the problems sorted out, HQ pulled the plug, and the whole facility was sold for scrap.

re:gm rotary
gm designed the chevy monza originaly to be rotary powered, they were so close to puting it into production that the first year monza (75) had the trans tunnel about 3inches higher than the 76-80vega,monza, vega, etc they did this because of the output shaft centerline is higher in a rotary then a conventional piston engines crank centerline.....
