First---of is this enough to run 12's??
Second-- Will The edelbrock headers, that I have on my 87 305 tpi motor bolt up to my vortec heads??? If not Then there up for sale. Nickleplated chrome. cost me 400.

Well Ill try to get pics soon, Ive got old pics of the short block that Ill post. Thanks guys for helping this build up become what it has become>

I'm running the Edelbrock headers with vortex heads and the fit just fine. It sounds like a good combo, i would go with a 3.73 gear though, to get the R's where they should be.

Hey guys, Ive got the heads on,, and now Im trying to decide if I should Use 1.6 rockers or 1.5 rockers.

The lift of the cam is as follows Comp (12-236-3)
218/224 duration,, 462/477 lift,,,,112 LSA =w1.5 Rocker
With 1.6 rocker the lift goes to 493/508 lift. But does anything else change,, like the operating range of the cam. Duration????
Ive heard people tell me to put both on,,, so I dont know which one would be best.. Check my sig and above setup for all the parts im using. Let me knoww --

I think you should call a place and ask. But the durration would be longer and so would the openings, ask Kirch or gandy at school. Think of it this way if you dont already, your multiplying the cam by 1.5 and then 1.6 if you use the larger rockers. But i think most cam companies messure thier lift and durrations with 1.5 rockers, so do the math and figure out what your getting with the 1.6's.

Car: Guess
Engine: Crazy 8
Transmission: So close to being a manual I can taste it
You could start with the 1.5s and work with it, tune it, and do some complete tests. Then swap over to the 1.6s and see what happens. I have had 1.5s work better in some engines. Mostly though the 1.6s will yield a little more power. Just try it and see if you have both sets anyway.

The duration won't change.....

hey max,

Well see Ive called comp cams and summit and 2 summit guys told me that the duratiion and operating range (RPM RANGE) of the cam will drastically change. On the other hand I called Comp cams and Wheelermotorsports, and those 2 guys told me it would only effect the rpm range by like 1-150 rpms so basically it wont change the duration.. Which is what I thought. But I think Im gonna go with the 1.6 rockers just because I can get them from a friend for 100 bucks brand new. There harland sharp full rollers 3/8 stud. Well see how they do. Ive heard 1.6 put more wear on the valve train though. Anyone have experience with using the 1.6 rockers???? I think it should be alright. I also tried my setup in my new desktop dyno and got

381 horsepower @5300 Rpms
493 Ft Lbs Torque @ 2300RPMS

Sounds good to me Lots a torrque?? Hopefully Ill be pulling more horsies with the porting of the tpi,, and the work done to the heads. Looking for 400 at the fly.

Just wondering though,,, Is that typical for the torque peak to be at 2300RPMS??? Or is that just desktop dyno messing up???
It stays at an average of around 450 all the way to 5 grand but the peak is still at 2300???? Seems weird to me but, I dont mind.. Well if anyone can anwser some of the Q's in this post that would be greatly appreciated.. thanks guys.

From what I've read the 383's do produce max torque numbers from 2300 rpm onwards as you desktop sheet claimed with a milder cam like the one you're running. But they can very depending on your setup ie heads/intake/compression ratio etc.

Here are some examples:

Schmidt 383, from Chevy High Performance August 1996

350 four bolt block, .030 over

Scat cast steel 3.75" crank

Badger flat top pistons, 9.5 compression

DRS 5.7" rods

World products Sportsman II heads, 200cc

Competition Cams hydraulic cam, 211/221 @ .050, .442/.465 lift, 112deg lobe sep, Competition Cams Magnum rocker arms

Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, BG prepared Holley

Max Torque 503 @ 2800rpm
Max HP 410@5000rpm

------------------------------------------------------------------

Hot Rod/Summit 383, from Hot Rod March 1992

350 block, .030 over

3.75" stock 400 crank

5.7" production rods

Keith Black Hypereutectic Pistons, Compression 9.5:1

Crane Cams hydraulic cam; 236/246 @ .050, .510/.512" lift, 112deg lobe sep

AFR 190cc aluminum heads, 80cc chambers, 2.02/1.60" valves

Crane Cams aluminum roller rocker arms; 1.6 intake, 1.5 exhaust

Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake mainfold, Holley 750 double pumper carb

1-3/4" headers

Max Torque 435 @4750 rpm
Max HP 450@5750

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hot Rod 383, from Hot Rod January 1990

350 block, .030 over

3.75" stock 400 crank

5.7" production rods

Manley forged flat-top pistons, 10:1 compression

Crane hydraulic roller cam: 222/222 deg @ .050, .525/.525 lift, 112deg lobe sep

Brodix -8 heads with 2.02/1.60" valves 73cc chambers

Edelbrock Performer intake manifold, Holley 750 carb

Max Torque 452@4000rpm
Max HP 431@5500rpm

Hope this helps
