Do I *need* the LT1 radiator in my swap ?

I have 1500+ miles on my 92 LT1 B4C 6spd Camaro now...

I run it at various autocross/road race events.

Today heat index was 104 degrees!! and two other cars blew coolant hoses... Anyway, my LT1 third gen with the stock TPI radiator and stock TPI electric fans was running past 220 towards 230, but it did not go to the red... this was much hotter than I have ever seen it run...

I ran the heater and I have the fans wired on... but, am wondering if the TPI radiator just is not enough for the LT1 motor ?

You can run hoses in a certain way so that you can use your TPI radiator with an LT1, but perhaps I need to get an LT1 radiator in there instead - only problem is awhile back ago it was test-fitted and it did not test fit too well with the 3rd gen air lid at all..

Anyone else take their LT1 third gen to track events ???

When I did the swap I didn't even mess with my old radiator. The LT1 radiator will fit with some minor work. I had to cut the top radiator cover piece on the end close to the cap because it interfered with the cap. It wasn't a perfect fit but it's barely noticeable. Also swapped in the LT1 dual fan setup since it bolted right up. I run a 160 degree thermostat and the max temp I've seen so far is about 200. Cruising on the highway it stays about 165.

Thanks! On this note...and since I'd like to slowly move towards LT4 power... any tips on fitting a Be-Cool or Griffin, high capacity radiator..

Should I order the TPI style or LT1 style Be-Cool/Griffin radiator ?

Thanks!

I'm running a new TPI radiator and have never gotten to 220 at all. I have a Hypertech 160 degree thermostat, Redline water wetter, dual TPI radiator fans and the PCM is set to have the first turn on at 160 and the second at 185 if I remember correctly. I have driven it pretty aggresively on a 98 degree day but I would imagine autocrossing it would be worse. I can't imagine that there would much difference in the radiators other than shape. I could be wrong though. One thing that might help is if you don't have A/C on the car, you can always take the condensor out for a little better air flow.

I have a stock 3rd gen tpi radiator in my car. I have the tpi dual fan set up and a 160 degree stat. The pcm is programmed to turn the fans on at 185 and off at about 160. I have 5000 miles on my swap and no problems. It runs about 175-180 exept in stop and go traffic where it will go up to 195 and kick the fans on.
Power wise i'm making 430 hp.

The LT1 radiator is the way to go, IMO. It fits without a problem...just some minor fabrication.

I run mine at track events...had one yesterday in fact. www.mnfbc-pde.com - my club puts on an event each year. Great time...
