305 TBI to Carb VATS question
My friend needs this question answered. He is swapping from a 91 RS from 305 TBI to a built up 305 that has a carb. He is worried about the VATS killing his car.
The carb is a q-jet, but he can get a Holley to throw on there.
What would he have to do, to swap to a carb, and make sure the VATS wont disable the car?

It's pretty simple, since this is a 91 you will have to do a few little modifications to the wiring but nothing serious.
You will have to remove the driver-side kick panel (where the hood release is) there will be a relay in there (starter enable relay) , it may be hidden on a pile of sticky shiat. Remove that relay, make a test with a voltmeter to find which thick wire has power when "cranking" and hook it up the the other wire in this relay going to the starter... (check resistence from wire at starter to the relay). Now your car can start without the vats.
as per everything else, TBI to carb is fairly simple , you can remove the ecm, plug the distributor wires , power feed for the coil and hook up the old wiring to the starter , it should start right up !
now remember, you don't have any VATS anymore so might be a good thing to think about an alarm.
also, VERY IMPORTANT, reroute the fuel line to be on the passenger side, you do not want this in front or going around your engine, this could result in a very bad fire.

:hail:Thank you sir!:hail:
The whole VATS issue has been bugging me since I thought about buying the wrecked car.
I'm the guy he posted for, BTW.
I couldn't get my password to work yesterday and it was just one whole big mess of confusion, but I got it now!

Hehe, I'm doing the same swap, but I removed the ECM and just about every wire under the dash and under the hood. I haven't dug into the VATS yet, but I'm going to try and make it work. I don't see why it should need the ECM. I'll post info if I get it to work.

So after you do this, it bypasses the vats and it will leave your fuel pump alone also????

carb cars have mecanical fuel pump .... or aftermarket electric low pressure ones.
When you bypass the "starter enable relay" it just lets your car crank ... that's it .
