LT1 lessons learned

alrighty swappers lets get some lessons together to help out anyone else...Maybe if we're lucky sticky immortality will be in our future.

1. performanceplumbing.com has a/n quick disconnects.
2. replace all the seals in the timing cover while the engine is out! (mine is leaking now) ugh..
3. the water pump and optispark are known troublespots.. replace with new if possible to avoid later trouble..
4. Meziere makes an electric water pump that plugs into the stock setup to eliminate the dreaded waterpump oil seal leak available at summit or Jegs.
5. When going with roller rockers or headers be sure to get the LT4 knock module to avoid excessive knock retard due to noise.

There are more, post the ones you can think of..

1. if you remove or replace the OptiSpark, make sure you get the dowel pin on the cam shaft lined up correctly with the notch in the back of the opti.

2. when torquing the intake manifold bolts, double check the correct torque amount before turning the wrench. another

You can densensitize the knock retard in the pcm programming. No need for LT4 knock module.

1. change motor mounts before installing engine
2. drop motor and tranny together
3. Get a good rad
4. Check head gaskets before installing engine
5. Check intake rear seal for any leakage
6. do not install headers before dropping the engine.
7. replace old fuel lines if needed
8. Check waterpump seal, it will damage your optispark if it leaks
9. Replace u-joint on driveshaft
10. make sure your tranny-cooling lines and power steering lines are well attach as this will make very weird vibration in the car.
11. always use fusable links when rewiring the lt1 harness
12. Replace tranny rubber mount
13. DO NOT over tighten tranny crossmember bolts, you'll be screwed if this is strip.
14. check for wires or hoses too close to engine accessories belt, if needed, reroute it
15. I suguest mouting the ecm in the car, not in the engine bay.
16. For everything you mount that requires bolts, use stainless steel bolts and nuts as you will not have to scream your car when trying to remove rusted bolts.

This one should be for any swap, but Loctite is a good idea.

This is for any swap, but Loctite is always a good rule of thumb.

Maybe this is a no brainer to everyone else but.... figure out what you want and buy it as a package deal if possible. This will save you tons of $$$$ and time trying to track down buying all the little parts you need.
For example ....If you want the corvette LT1 set up pay the extra and buy the Corvette set up don't think you can just buy a F Body or Impalla LT1 and get the stuff later.
The more you can get in one shot the better off you are.

This is a must have also with the Lt1 in general. It aids in prolonging the life of the dreaded Opti Spark. It's so inexpensive and works so well, I consider it a must have.
