'88 GMC Suburban-'92 Camaro RS

I'm thinking about swapping the 350 in the Suburban and putting it in the Camaro which has a 305. Does anyone have any idea what the horsepower and torque rating was for half ton Suburban and if this is a good idea. Both are throttle body injected, btw.

IIRC those crappy TBI 350s were good (?) for about 210 HP and probably somewhere around 300 ft-lbs.

Not much to input.... it's one TBI motor for another, should just slap right in; use the 350 TBI; you might have to use the 350 chip to get the fuel curve right.

Your drinking-straw L03 exhaust chokes a 305. It will completely strangle a 350. That should be you first mod: an exhaust system, every single piece all the way from the heads to the street, for some other car such as a 88 350 TPI (and under no circumstances should any piece of it be able to bolt up to any L03 part, so it will be a whole system swap all at once).

Car: 1991 Formula
Engine: 350 firebreathing inches of Small Block Chevrolet
Transmission: A 700R4 that has trouble handling the formentioned 350.
In 1987 - 1991 Suburbans 5.7 (engine code LO5) had 210 horse @ 4000 rpm's and 300 ft. pd's @ 2800 rpm's.

So should be a noticeable difference from the LO3 that's in the Camaro (40hp and 45tq.). Very easy swap.

Good Luck, Garrett

Yeah, now that I finally found out what the horsepower and torque numbers were for the 350, I'm gonna put probably a TPI 350 in there or somethin. Where did you get those numbers for those Suburban years. It took me a LONG time to finally find them somewhere.

Just did a search on yahoo for "Suburban horsepower" and looked through and 2 minutes later I had the info.

Don't go with the TPI just get a carb. and put it on the 350, cam it and headers and have some fun!!!

**** carburetors. I want decent gas mileage. Tuned port is good injection. Hell, sequential would be MUCH better.

A carb. can get very good gas mileage if it's properly tuned and jetted (and you know how to drive one), plus they cost far less and are easier to install then a TPI and they beat the crap out of a TBI for performance.

I had my '84 Z/28 w/ a 406 (383 hp and 456tq) a 5 speed and 3.73 gears and got 17 miles to the gallon on a regular basis, with a Holley 750cfm double pumper carb.

Don't overlook the carbs man.

TBI in '88 used a different ECM...so just make sure that you use your stock ECM.

I paid a alarming $25 for and then spent about $30 on the rebuild kit and hello 750cfm's of great Holley Performance.

One of the best HP investments you can make, if you want big HP for cheap go carb. FI can make decent HP but only to a limit. What's the highest TPI car on this site? (I don't know but I guess about 400HP max., non-boosted of course) How about the pushrod G0D LS1 engine's how much HP do they have max (450?). I have seen 350 SBC with Holley carbs put out 550 horse . So sure FI will save you some gas $ but the carb will perform better (or at least my opinion).

Just my $.02

Good Luck, Garrett

Keep the FI, carbs do make the most top end power, but fuel ecoomy and bottom end power is were fuel injection is better.

So ask your self, do you wanna be faster at the track (carb), or have quick throttle, and good gas mileage (EFI).

TBI has a bad rap for being weak..... thats becuase alot are. But a guy (on diy prom board) has designed a circuit to run dual tbi's. Some guys have already cut apart two tbi's and welded them together to make a four barrel.. Thats 800 - 1000 cfm (depending on porting).. Some guys will have this setup running very shortly.

With proper tuning, I believe that when cfm is equal, fuel injection will always make more power over the whole rpm range.
