Caprice 350 non-LT1??

There's a 350 out of a '96 Caprice at the local salvage yard. The guy said it's not an LT1, it's just a 350. I looked at it, and it looks like an LT1. What's the difference between a Caprice 350 and an LT1? He said he wants $850 for it, everything's uncluded(computer wiring harness, the works). I think I can talk him down to $750 or so. Is that a good deal, or should I not waste my time. What's the aftermarket like for a Caprice 350? Do they use some of the same components as the LT1? Thanks

make sure its not a 4.3

a number of 4.3 V8 cars were made to commerate the 40th anniversary of the small block chevy

could very well be a 4.3 that he means by it NOT being an LT1

the 4.3 was known as the L99

Thanks, how do I make sure it's not a 4.3 liter? But, if it is a tru 350, is it that much different than the F-body LT1? Is it worth getting and modding?

Sure there is a difference, about 20 horse and torque . I think the reason for the difference is the different cam. 4.3 v-8's (265c.i.) were dogs in Impla's but were used because the first small block chevrolet introduced was a 265c.i. engine (and had the same bore and stroke).

Ok, so aside from the 4.3 liter in the Caprices, was there an actual LT1 engine in them (with iron heads of course)? Or was there just the 4.3 liter LT1's in the Caprice? This guys says it's a 350 out of a '96 Caprice. He said it's not an LT1, because it doens't have aluminum heads like the F-body's do. So, if it IS a iron headed-LT1, would it be worth $750?

Yes there was an LT-1 in the Caprices (I think maybe only Police cars but I'm not sure) I know they were in those cars, they were rated around 15-20 less horse than the F-body L-T1's.

Yes the LT-1 is worth $750 if it comes complete with acc. and computer.

I read somewhere that if it was a 4.3 liter, "4.3" was stamped on the block somewhere. Is this true? Also, if I get the VIN number off the block, where can I decode it to see if it's a 350 LT1? Thanks,

Look at the 8th digit in the vin.......LT1 is a "P". They also put the "P" motor in the Buick Roadmaster.

Peace
