70's 350 questions

I looking into a 1970's style chevy 350 to put into my 86 Z-28. The engine was put into a 1983 chevy conversion van. My question is: Will this engine match up with my 700-R4 transmission? I know I will probably need a different flexlpate. But since it's an engine of the 70's will it work with my car?

The only possible problem you may encounter is the starter mount. The 350 block may or may not be drilled and tapped for the straight accross bolt pattern, nothing that can't be cured in 15 min. Chances are it is drilled already, mine was.

The engine will mount to the transmission and the starter will mount to the engine. If your current engine is '85-earlier, the flex plate will work as well.

Only possible issue is the dipstick tube, which was on the driver's side until the very late 70's. You'll either have to do some careful bending to clear the stock exhaust manifold, or get headers.

my engine block is a 1969 350 block 010 and it is bolted right up to a 700R4 with zero problems. the dipstick is on the drivers side but I have headers and don't have a prob with it being inaccesible. the 305 motor mounts that mount on the block will also fit the older blocks as well. not sure if you have A/C but if you do and don't want it then the pass side header will have a TON of room. my header can be removed from the pass side w/out breaking a sweat but the drivers side is a little bit more tricky. if you have A/C and plan on keeping it your pass side header is going to be a real pain in the a$$. the flexplate on mine is a 400 sbc plate b/c I have a stroked out 350 and the started is a mini starter w/bolt holes directly accross from eachother if I remember right and I have no prob putting that starter in. that starter however was pretty adjustable b/c it can be swiveled to any position I want. I just did this swap last summer so if anyone has any questions email me at southpaw1969@hotmail.com I even have all reciepts of parts used from the Summit catalog so I can supply parts numbers to things such as the starter. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR SWAP!!!

The dipstick problem is not really about accecibility, but that the exhaust manifold bolts up to the y-pipe EXACTLY were the dipstick is... i just bent my tube, chopped the blade off the dipstick and put a steel cable on it,and it works great.
