781 heads with the larger 2.19/1.88 valves installed and some port work can easily flow enough for 600+ hp.

thanks,Is $600 CAN too much for this head?,mild port, bigger valves, any spring for any cam etc..

Stephen cam recommendations for this head? 8:1 compression, hopefully to get more with thinner gasket.Supercomp headers, stock valve train, dual plane intake(undecided)750 CFM vac secondary(specific?)..According to 10yrs worth of car craft, this head untouched is good for 350-375 HP but I dunno how accurate is that..

$600 canadian!? thats REALLY cheap for almost any high performance head.. especially for a big block. Edelbrock SBC heads are about $1600 cdn or something

$600 each or for a set? Bare castings should be around $100-$150 each. Add the cost of new valves, springs, retainers, exhaust valve spacers, keepers, probably new guides, valve job, machine work for new springs, etc, it all adds up.

I can't remember how much I invested in my first set of 781 heads. I did my own port work. When I broke my second head I just said put a set or Merlin oval ports on it. I've done more work to the Merlins since an assembled set doesn't have enough spring for my cam. Merlins here are around $750 each for an assembled head. Aluminum assembled heads are over $1700 each for rectangular port. I'm not sure if anyone makes aluminum oval port heads. Edelbrock might but it would still be roughly the same price.

Go with a CompCams Xtreme Energy cam. Pick one that best suits your engine and car combination. Don't try using the XE294H-10 if you only have a 2500 stall converter, 3.42 gears, 8:1 compression etc.

Just from what you've said, a XE262H-10 or XE268H-12 should work but there's no way you're going to make 450-500 hp with that combination of parts. Engine HP maybe but probably high 300's or low 400's to the rear wheels.

thanks for the suggestions but..What if I hog the heads now(w/bigger valves) then get a bigger cam than you suggested would it be really that bad on a stock shortblock??Then when I finally do the shortblock Ill have the power goal that I need 450-500HP..

Also would an Lt1 starter fit?It seems like its a lot smaller than gen I starters

I read in the topic that you should set the headers before setting the BBC..The y-pipe or duals wont get on until the motor is done..Can I just install the headers on the engine and drop it together? What about the tranny and block being put in together?Im almost done with the part selection and now getting into procedure..thanks for all the input
