You should buy him a trip to Hawaii. That plus the 400 would be cheaper than putting in that damn V6!!!!!! So you'd still be ahead of the game.
Just don't let him drive it!!!!!!

if you paid for the Iroc out of your pocket then put the car in the garage if he'll let you, if not and the car is worth it put it in a mini storage facility and pay the rent. and when yopu have your v8 ready to go then pull her out of storage and put it together then. you'll be so much happier if you do this engine swap once. regardless you will still have to have a regular beater b/c you don't want to drive your baby in the winter. great beater would be a mini van, then you can haul your motor to a machine shope rain snow or shine and not worry about it getting contaminated with water. think of all the other things you could haul around in the back of the mini van, treasure finds from the junk yards!!!

putting a v6 into an iroc-z is treason. if i was that retarded i would be driving a honda. he said i could get a 305, that part is taken care of. thanks guys. now for the next order of buisness...........how to make a formula 400 look like a 305 in front of someone like my dad who knows absolutly sh*t about chevys. also, i am a heterosexual male, therefore i will NOT drive an automatic, im thinking a 700R4 to T-5 conversion. that can wait though............

b/c you are hetrosexual you will not drive an automatic??? that is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. you want to know what really makes a man?? don't ever turn your back on your responsibilities!!!take care of your kids (when you have some) take care of your bills w/out filing for bankruptcy!!! thats what makes a real man not a stick shift car!!! you must be a youngster. I wish you were here in Minnesota so my automatic could show you what a real car is, a real car is one with *****!!!!! 1 h.p. at least per cube.

im not trying to trash the guys who drive autos. thats fine. its just every time i drive an auto it reminds me of my taurus and that to me just takes some of the sporty-ness out of having an iroc. besides, any way you slice it, its still going to rape the ricers, and in the end thats what makes our f-bods superior on the street.........
#58
well man or automatic you better have more than just a 305 or a stock 350 now days to be the ricers. those cars are so light that with a mere 200 hp will give you some trouble with them unless you have something with some umph under the hood. *** those ricers drive ugly cars!!! especally when they put those tall alum spoilers on the rear deck lid YUCK!!

So it is an automatic LB9 IROC. You already have the go-ahead to do the swap, but changing from the TH700-R4 to a T5 manual transmission isn't such a good plan, unless you get a very strong T5.
Changing from automatic to a manual transmission DOES require changing the chip and/or ECM.
Just FYI, I did have an automatic 1993 Taurus SHO. I loved that car. Wish I kept it. It was one of my favorite cars. That car was no sloucher.
Are you rebuilding the engine on your own or just buying a new crate motor? There are a lot of options you have when it comes to that. Just depends on how much money you're willing to spend.
Even with a modest budget you can get a NEW Chevrolet motor with a 3-Year 50,000 mile warranty.
I'd say do the motor swap first. Keep the automatic transmission until you have the money to do that swap. I'm sure you will be more than happy with the automatic. Go into the transmission forum and learn about the auto-manual swap. It's not exactly a cakewalk either.

Axle/Gears: 2.73 - boo racing yay MPG
Don't bother swapping trannies - an auto will shift faster and more consistantly than you or I ever will. In fact I am abiut 2 seconds form swapping a 700R-4 into my T-5 bird. I am dreaming of a 3.00 1st mmmmmmmmmm

yeah it was in michigan, all the roads up there are straight and flat and it was on a road that was just repaved, 3.4 miles long, corn fields on both sides, no houses, no cops. perfect test-strip. it took a while to get there but it made it. my speedometer only goes to 85, i had it pegged and my friend in his rustang was behind me and he said he had his past 115, and i was outrunning him so..... it really wasnt all that bad. that taurus is like a rock past 100, belive it or not..........

Really that’s not that unrealistic, lots of cars out there will pull 120. I’m pretty sure that most normal Taurus’s should pull that (or close to it, never had one over 110), and the SHO’s should be more then capable of 135 or so unless they run out of gear. We used to clock cars late night on a stretch of highway and I know of an ’87 Sunbird (2.0L, 3 speed auto) that we’ve cocked a few times with 2 way averages in the low 120’s (ONE HELL OF A SCARY RIDE on non speed rated, 13” tires). I’ve been clocked at 147 (at least that’s what the police radar showed) in one of my 3rd gens, and I’ve got a pic of the Speedo in my ’97 WS6 pegged.

*cough*
All I got to say, is when you got a stick - you drive
When you got an auto - you just steer (you're just along for the ride)
Sorry guys, but a stick is just completely mroe fun than an automatic.
"Oh but look how consistant the auto is! Look how fast I can go with it!"
Whoop-dee-friggen-doo!
I mean seriously, I got MUCH more respect for the guy in the 2.8/T5 setup at the track, cuttin' low .500 reactions, with consistant '60 times. Why? Because that's a person that KNOWS his car, and KNOWS how to drive. I don't care if he IS just trying to break into the 16's
Automatics just aren't as much of a challange. Bring the rpms to 2500... hold the brake... release and mash the gas. Hold gas.
Where's the fun???
/rant
Oh, have fun with the 305 - just don't sink TOO much money into it. a mild 383 would be my own suggestion - get a 350 block, with a 383 stroker kit!

riiiight you just keep the auto in OD and drive right
Maybe for a stock trans and a weak motor....
Sure a stick is more fun, but I'd rather go faster and be more consistant
And you just hold the rmps at 2500 and let off the brake to go? um riiiiiiight...

yes a standerd is fun to drive,an some people are consistant while drivin one.but when i race at the track its not only for time slips but i like to bring home a check.an ill laugh all the way to the bank to cash it.don't get me wrong i love drivin stick, but every time you use the clutch or swich gears it cost a few thousand's on the clock.i had some killer cars in my time but ill only race autos, even if i wasn't a quad in a wheelchair.

Let's not forget......
Oh yeah and driving a stick in the city is a pain. It really is a pain after a while and gets old. That is one of the things I hate about a stick... (not to mention clutches)

First off, my 2 cents is if you're paying for it, do what YOU want to it. After I dinged up my 84 2.8, i parked it and started saving my $$$ for a 350 for it. Sure, mom and dad were pissed, but oh well. I stumbled on my 88 during that time, and yeah, it has a 305, but I bought it over their complaints cause it was my money. The 84 is sitting still waiting for an engine transplant.
Oh, and about the insurance thing... my insurance was the exact same from my 84 v6 to my 88 v8. Insurance companies do not care what size engine you have. They see "Camaro" on your information and your rates jump. My first car was a 1986 Dodge Daytona (not even the turbo'd CS model, mind you) and my insurance was like 1/4 of what it is now. No tickets, no wrecks the insurance knows about.
To sum up... I guess my take is to just do what you want. If daddy won't let you drive it at first, so be it. Just keep workin on it and make it faster.
Edit: I was 16 when I bought my 305. I went from the slug 2.8 to the 305 without a problem... I think I drove that 2.8 for all of like 6 months, and it gave me more problems in the winter than my 305 does (go figure). I dunno where you stand exactly, but I guess my view, after having driven that 2.8 for a while, is just let it sit until the 5.0 is done. If you don't get to drive for a while, it's worth it, IMO.
