it may not be the belt humming at all. it may be one of the accessory drives. you say it started when you started using your A/C. maybe that is going bad. it may also be the water pump. take the belt off and spin the waterpump and see if it makes noise. also try the alt, and PS pump pulley. try getting another belt to see if it still does it. return the belt if it isnt it

i noticed the belt only humms when im idling and my ac is on. if i turn the ac off it stops humming. when it firts started humming i popped the hood and saw the belt vibrates about 2 inches back and forth. and now my ac clutch is making a horrid *** noise.

if your belt is moving back and forth about 2-4 inches then you have to be using the wrong belt or your belt tensioner is messed up.

hmmm... sounds like the ac compresser is starting to go. If teh belt has a good deal of tension and the tensioner is fine, the bad compressor may be generating vibrations that that excite the belt to cause it to vibrate like that. More likely a bad compressor/clutch/auto tensioner but just a thought.

i thought it might be the new belt routing putting extra preasure on my compressor. if so do you or anyone else know if there is some sort of idler pulley that takes the place of the smog pump that will allow me to run the factory belt routing but still have the extra horses?

there is an idler pilley to put in the smog pumps place that will allow you to keep the stock belt route. i do not know where you can get one though. i sen one on a car at a local car show here. ask around on here you will get an answer. I have been running the modified belt route on my z28 for about 2 years now and have had no problems at all.

You can put the pump back on. It doesn't have to have the hoses going to it for it to spin. It'll still pump air, but it won't hurt anything. It's only slightly larger than any bracket that you'll need there to hold a dummy pulley.

The main reason you pulled it was to get rid of all the damn hoses, right? That's why I did it. So just putting the pump back on will still leave the engine the way you want it.

try gm# 10129569 (ramjet serpentine smog pump delete pulley/idler) or gm# 10186167 (9C1 caprice export eliminator idler pulley).

This isn't much help but may car is doing the same thing. I have not removed my smog pump though. I noticed that it makes the same humming noise with the defrosters on also and like you said it only happens when the car is idling. I havn't found a soulution other than not running the AC or defrost. I guess I'm letting you know this before you spend time or money putting the smog pump back or finding another pully.

hmm my car never started humming till a year after i removed the smog pump so i attributed this to my removing the smog pump and having an extra coupkle of inches of belt with nothing to keep it from vibrating back and forth.
