062 Vortec Heads - bolt on ready
I have for sale a pair of 062 casting number Vortec heads. They were going to be used on my 383 build but i got a great deal on some aluminum heads so these are of no use to me any more.
062 Vortec Heads:
*64cc combustion chambers
*1.94/1.5 valves
*Howards Valve Springs with dampers - these springs were matched to my LT4 Hotcam with 1.6 rockers (.525 lift and 280 duration)
*ARP 3/8 screw in studs with guide plates
*Howards +5 titanium retainer locks for extra valve travel
*New umbrella style valve seals for extra valve travel
I tested these heads to .575 valve lift and had no contact whatsoever. They looked to have enough clearance for .600 or so but i stopped at .575 because that was all i needed for the LT4 Hotcam (.525 + .050 for clearance)
These heads are brand new! They were installed and torqued down but never ran! Id prefer local pick-up as i dont want any shipping "accidents"
$600obo
Thanks,
Ian

I believe the spring retainers are chromoly. They came with the springs when I bought them. These heads are far from what you get from the chevy dealer. With the right combo they are capable of 500hp+

Thank you, Im still new on Chevy I hope you dont mind me asking about interchangability of Vortec heads ... Im trying to get the crux of the biscuit. I have an 89 block which these heads will bolt to correctly but the factory intake, and any other gen 1 wont because of the center 2 manifold bolt angle and placement on each side. The coolant passages match up fine because these are L31 Vortecs which do not have reverse cooling. I have to look for a Vortec intake. I could not use fast-burn Vortecs because they are reverse cooling. .... Right? ... Are these heads ported or port-matched to a specific intake? Thanks Keith

Not sure these are the right heads for me, but they are probably very close. My crank is purchased and straight so my 350 to 302 conversion is going forward. The crank will be nitrided and 6.0 rods with std 350 pistons shaved to 0-deck. I looked at LS4 Hotcam specs but duration wasnt appealing as compared to CC252XFI which I am pretty set on running with 1.5 rocks and a victor jr vortec 2v and tbi. Not sure these heads with smaller valves would choke on the victor with any RPM or that the victor would destroy low end torque which I will need to maximize for the smaller cubes. I guess I will have to shell out put it together and find out. I would like to know what machine work has been done to these heads and why the photo shows 2 studs missing. Also what exactly would make these heads generate 500HP?. Thanks Keith

Re: 062 Vortec Heads - bolt on ready
I bought them from a local machine shop (Albers Automotive) already reconditioned. They were rebuilt to stock specs at that time. Then i had them machined for screw in studs and the valve stem seals moved down... i think .050 but i cant remember to be honest. The push rod passages have also been clearanced for 1.6 ratio rocker arms. The bowls, ports, and intake runners are all as cast from GM and can be matched to your application. Like i said these are basically virgin heads with the performance upgrades to the studs and valvetrain already done.
Before i found the aluminum heads i have now, my plan was to blend the bowls just a bit, and port match the intake runners to an edelbrock RPM air gap dual plane manifold. This hasent been done yet just because i was going to install them as cast and see how it ran, them clean them up later.
With the LT4 hotcam i was projecting 450hp and that cam is fairly mild. A little more aggressive cam should put it near 500 no problem.
The small valves were retained because i was planning a 6500rpm red line and the larger valves would have moved the powerband too high for the cast rotating assembly.
The 2 studs are missing because i had put 7/16 studs on that cylinder to measure pushrod length with my new rockers. There is nothing wrong with the head and i have the 3/8 studs and guide plate for that cylinder, they will be put back in and torqued to spec (60ft-lbs) or i can give them to you and you can do it, its up to you.
Im sorry for not getting back to you sooner and if its easier for you please feel free to call me at the number in my original post. I will answer any other questions you have to the best of my knowledge.

Ian (??),
Thanks for the great info, I believe these would be a great starter head for me. I will be straight with you I wont have the money before Jan 7 (1.) and Im not close enough to pick them up (2.) I can mail you head boxes from a machine shop with packing in them so you can just stuff them in there, tape them up and put on your front step for the postman. That being said I would offer 425.00 and to pay all shipping costs. I dont know how buying on the computer off of ebay works ... tried twice and was burned once. Keith

Stock, typically the retainers hit the with more than a .470" lift. What kind of stem seals did you have installed? Typically they cut down both the diameter and height of the guides and install positive type seals, either way it's usually more than .050" cut unless you're using offset keepers or something along those lines.
I doubt that you have all umbrella seals, they work on the exhaust, but without any kind of positive seal on the intake you'd have oil control problems.

Re: 062 Vortec Heads - bolt on ready
Keith,
If you could pay before Christmas id be more apt to negotiate on the price. The reason they are up for sale is to help Santa put on the big show. After Christmas im pretty firm on the 500 price. I have over 700 in them and id rather put them on the shelf for the next build than take too much of a hit.
As far as shipping goes id help you get them to your door i just want you to understand that they are in perfect shape when they leave my house. If something happens to them in transit i dont want to be held responsible. I have had too many bad experiences with shipping "accidents".
Let me know
