Car: 1985 Camaro Z28, VIN F

Transmission: T-56, self rebuilt 700+ hp
Axle/Gears: Moser 12bolt, 3.42 trutrac
T56 retrofit replacement for T5 , Muncie, Lakewood, etc.

SOLD -Still 2 cores available from next to last post

Freshly Rebuilt, Zero Miles on rebuild.

This is a Retro Fit T56, built for adapting the strength and performance of the T56 transmission, to older GM style bellhousing, clutch, and linkage setups. The transmission was completely torn down and inspected. The adaptor will bolt to the T5 bellhousing of your thirdgen and retain use of the stock linkage. Can also mount to a straightup bellhousing like a Muncie, BOP, or standard SFI (lakewood, etc.) 4-bolt bellhousings.

Here are some of the main features:

* Standard stronger LS1 T56 gear ratios, using LS1 input shaft
First: 2.66
Second: 1.78
Third: 1.3
Fourth: 1
Fifth: 0.74
Sixth: 0.5
Reverse: 2.9

* Carbon Fiber synchro blocker rings

* New Synchro keys, springs

* New Fork pads

* Front steel adapter plate drilled for both Muncie/T10/saginaw bellhousing, and the 18deg rotated bellhousing used by the T5 Camaro/Firebirds

This is a high quality rebuild with the highest level of attention to detail. Here are the main shimming specs that were used for a performance rebuild:

Main shaft: 0.002" Preload
Counter shaft: 0.003" Preload
Counter shaft extension: 0.002" End-Play

Case and all parts were cleaned and inspected. The case was not sand blasted to keep grit out of the internals.

Local pickup (19711) is preferred, but shipping would be $100-$150 depending on your location.

Please feel free to contact with any questions.

$1600 + PP fees + S/H (About $130)

And I still have the LT1 inputshaft and midplate for this. If anyone wants just a simple LT1-T56, I can convert this unit back for the same price.

Im interested in your transmission. How much torque can the transmission handle?

The unit is factory rated at 450lb-ft, but they have been known to handle upto 550-600lb-ft without problems. Alot depends on the driver and the weight of the car. It can be upgraded with parts to bring it up over 700lb-ft.

So the trannmission your selling is rated at 450 ft-lbs? Also how much would the parts cost to attain around 600 ft-lbs?

will this require a different driveshaft than the one in a car with a t-5 and will it also require a different crossmember?

The unit could probably hold 600lb-ft, (again, depending on driving habits and car weight) but would be pushing the envelope.

The upgrade parts are:
- steel 3/4 shift fork
- Billet synchro keys
- Bronze shift fork pads

I usually get my parts from http://www.thegearbox.org/T56.html. I usually recommend billet keys on 1/2, and 3/4 at a minimum, and usually put them on 5/6 also for my hipro rebuilds. I like to put the bronze pads on all four forks, since they are all prone to wear. Upgrades would be between $300-$500.

Yes, this requires a modified driveshaft, torque-arm, and crossmember.

http://www.gilbertchevy.com/BorgWarner/bwt56pics.cfm Has one of the early write-ups on the factory retro-fit unit. The one I have is the same except the shifter location is stock '93-'96 fbody.

Re: T56 retrofit replacement for T5 , Muncie, Lakewood, etc.

So to clarify, if i were to bolt up this transmission, i could reuse my current flywheel, bellhousing, clutch assembly, master cylinder, and current shifter boot placement from my t5 setup? Also how hard would it be to upgrage those few parts if you have never worked on a transmission before without screwing up any tolerances or things of that nature? And does your transmission come with a shifter, if not any suggestions?

You can reuse your current flywheel (26-spline), bell, clutch assm, MC. You will have to lengthen the tunnel hole and bolt a piece of steel onto the shifter to move it back to the stock location. I don't have anymore stock shifters left, they are usually available on Ebay for ~$20.

Both Spohn and SPD sell Xmems for the retrofit, if you don't want to cut/weld one. Spohn even sells a torque-arm also if you want to upgrade from the stocker. The driveshaft shortening should be left to a driveshaft shop. They will cut and reweld, then rebalance the shaft, and not a DIY job. Most of the aftermarket DS shops will build a custom length DS also. (Dennys, etc.)

Ok well im definitely interested. I would like the transmission to consistently handle around 600 ft lbs of torque. If we struck a deal, would you be willing to upgrade the transmission accordingly?

Yes, I can upgrade the TQ capacity of the trans for just the price of the parts.

While I don't/can't offer any warranty, I won't leave you hanging. I've been on the boards here for over 10 years, and won't be disappearing.

Well I've talked it over with my father and I'd like to purchase the transmission. Would you take $2200 for tranny+cost of upgading tranny+pp fees+shipping? Email me at jspeedy90@gmail.com if that works.

Sale Pending...

I may have an LT1 core and a GTO core in the next 2 weeks, if anyone is interested in either, or a retro-adapted from either.

(Clutch-Burner18, I emailed you, but never heard back???)

What specs are you looking for? I haven't received it yet to know what's wrong with it (reported to have 3rd gear issues). It's a stock MN12 GTO unit if you're looking for gear ratios?

Re: T56 retrofit replacement for T5 , Muncie, Lakewood, etc.

The GTO is the same externally (shifter/VSS/mounts/bellhousing/clutch/etc.) as the LS1-Fbody T56. Internally, it has upgraded synchros and a wider gear ratio for the heavier GTO car.

LS1/MM6 vs. GTO/MN12
1st Gear 2.66:1 2.97:1
2nd Gear 1.78:1 2.07:1
3rd Gear 1.30:1 1.43:1
4th Gear 1.00:1 1.00:1
5th Gear 0.74:1 0.84:1
6th Gear 0.50:1 0.56:1
Reverse 2.90:1 3.28:1

what kind of power is the gto core good for when its rebuilt?
The GTO unit is rated at the same power level as the LS1 (450lb-ft) and can accept the same upgrades to push it to the 700lb-ft level. The 2.97 gear set isn't a weak link like in the '93 LT1 units because the thickness of the gears was increased to offset the taller ratio teeth.

I probably won't have the core until next week or so, but I have $600 into it if someone wants to take it for that, I won't lose anything on it. I have a limited number of MN12 replacement parts, so I could tear it down for a repair estimate for a little more.

I am wanting a T56 Retro fit, You say that you have an Lt1 core, do you still have it? and can you use an adapter plate on it to make it work like the Retro fit?

You need to swap the LT1 input shaft for an LS1 input and cut off/down the TOB sleeve, but otherwise yes, you can put the plate on and use it as a retrofit. The GTO trans would adapt to the plate directly, but has different gears and better synchros than the LS1 unit.

My spreadsheet says I have one LS1 input shaft left in my parts pile, I'd have to verify if you wanted it.
