Starter Replacement
Hi,
I have a 1988 5.7l IROC, starter needs to be replaced.
Does the front exhaust need to come out or can it be installed through the lower control arm?
Thanks

The Art Of The Deal is, once you have it unbolted and the wires off, it needs to be rotated 180°, turned nose-down, and it will drop right through. Piece o cake. Too eeeeeezzzzy sometimes even; make sure it doesn't drop on your face or anything.
Installation is the reverse of removal.

Re: Starter Replacement
It's easy on my '83, and that's with a '84 H.O. exhaust...

Re: Starter Replacement
Replace with a LT1 or 96ish corvette starter. Smaller, lighter, stronger and easier to install.
The down side is, you need different bolts and the wires need gently pulled to reach the shorter starter. That takes some fiddling but is worth it.

Re: Starter Replacement
Before substituting starters check the bolt patterns. Straight across should mean you have a smaller flywheel, staggered you have the larger. Blocks will take both types. If it's staggered get a 6449 starter, small body used on trucks including 8.1L, just be sure to get the correct bolts.

Re: Starter Replacement
I don't think that the 3rd gen ever used the larger flywheel. I'm pretty sure that they were all 153 tooth.
I agree with substituting the newer starter. The original is a fat, overweight dog.
