"Service Engine Soon" Light

Ok, I have heard about the service engine soon light, and about the codes, but not to sound stupid (to late!) what are the codes and how do you check them.

The best way to get rid of the "service engine soon" is to easily stick elecrtical tape over it to get rid of the annoyingness.
