Low battery gage...but why?

No matter how much I run it the battery gage reads about 9 or so volts?( if that's what it's measured in) I have charged the battery two nights in a row and still it won't charge past that point. My battery is new from 9/15 and I disconnected it and clean corrosion from the terminals and reconnected it, it didn't help and I'm not sure where to go next with this, any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Low battery gage...but why?

What's the actual voltage at the batt?

As sofa said, if you haven't, use a volt meter on the battery itself.

Re: Low battery gage...but why?

I Don't have one unfortunately. I'm gonna jump it tomorrow and try and get it to a shop and have them run some tests. Is it possible the battery could have been faulty? Or sat too long on the shelf? To me it sounds like a battery issue. It's an interstate battery

A voltmeter is cheaper than a trip to a shop.

If you didn't already know, the stock gauge is hardly ever accurate.

Re: Low battery gage...but why?

I Don't have one
Go get one.

"This bolt is loose". "Tighten it". "I don't have a wrench". What's the next sentence?

What's the difference between having the right tool to tighten a bolt (wrench) and having the right tool to diagnose an electrical malfunction (meter)?

As said, a meter is FAR CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPER than "shop". PLUS, the NEXT TIME you have an electrical malfunction, you'll ALREADY HAVE THE TOOL, and we here won't have to read a bunch of P&M'ing about it. Instead of asking a bunch of mindless shot-in-the-dark "maybe it's this maybe it's that could it be this other" questions, you'll be able to FIX YOUR CAR.

Re: Low battery gage...but why?

Harbor Freight has some very affordable volt meters that will work for automotive purposes. Sometimes, they give them away for free with a coupon.

There's a HF in Reading, PA (20 mi drive).

Re: Low battery gage...but why?

Took it to pep boys and they told me is was the alternator. It cost me $15 bucks, and so I put a new alternator on right in the parking lot and now things are great.
