Another delay wiper problem

We have an 84 Z28 that the wipers worked fine, delay, low and high. The washers were not working so I purchased a new pump. Not knowing I removed the wiper motor cover to replace it and did not put it back on correctly. When I turned the wipers on, it wiped out all the plastic arms and locked up the wiper motor.

I purchased a new motor and installed the old cover and of course delay or washer would not work.

I then purchased a used motor cover and motor off a 87 with delay and installed it. The washers work fine and low and high but no delay wipers.

Hoping it was just a bad cover, I purchased another one (motor and cover) off an 84 Z28 and installed. Same thing, no delay but low and high work.

Any ideas on what else to check?

Thanks

Darin

Re: Another delay wiper problem

There is a blue/ish plastic wheel on the cover with a pie cut section. Was the wheel aligned with the pie cut facing up & towards the brake booster?
Also there is a lever on the motor/gear w/ a pin on it.The pin should be on top of the pie cut facing towards the brk booster. If the alignment is off funny things happen with the wipers.
Plus there are two contacts on the left side of the motor. These are not permanently affixed, they slide on/off.Make sure neither is missing.
The cover should be on tight, if a screw is missing or loose.Sometimes the delay wont work, but the slow/fast feature will.

IIRC the delay function is controlled by the cover - not the motor. Don't feel too bad,.... your not the first guy to install the cover with the arm in the wrong position causing it to break !

How do you KNOW that the wiper/covers from the 87 or the 84 were Delay parts ??

If I look at a non-delay motor next to a delay motor - how do I KNOW the difference ?

You can't say "because the turn signal had delay on it" because the PO could have made the same error,.. installing non-delay parts or motor by mistake thinking they were delay parts.

Re: Another delay wiper problem

Thank you both for your reply's.

I will check the screws for tightness. I did not take either of the cover/motor comb I purchased apart, due to my fear of getting the plastic mechanism messed up again. Only thing I can go by is they both had delay wiper controls (84 I saw, 87 was seller's information). I will open up the one I have on my bench and look inside.

Again thank you for your help!

Re: Another delay wiper problem

I do remember 1 experience with delay vs. non; When I installed a non-delay wiper onto my delay car; When the wipers were active and the wiper speed was moved to a "Delay" position,..... the wiper would stop motion no matter where it was in the sweep.

I'm NOT SURE about the full stop delay activation; might have just raised up an inch or 2 then did nothing,.... returning back to park when turned off.

I honestly don't KNOW how to tell them apart when looking at each side by side and I'm guessing that there must be some way to ID the circuit board inside the cover to verify what type of cover it is ?!?

Please, post your findings !

Re: Another delay wiper problem

Think only the delay option used that funky wheel on the cover.

Re: Another delay wiper problem

Thought I would update this. I was finally able to get them working.

As posted the two motors and covers that were suppose to be delay wipers both looked like this.

I know the last one I put on was off an 84 with a delay wiper control turn signal. I should have opened it up before I purchased it.

I watched ebay for quite awhile and picked up

It came new in box with install instructions.

Thanks everybody for the help.
