Turn signals not flashing.

My 1982 Camaro Berlinetta with a crate Chevy 350 is having a problem with its turn signals. When I switch either sides signals on, the interior and exterior turn signal lights do not flash. I have to manually wiggle the turn signal lever up and down to get a flashing effect from my signals.

My inexperienced theory is the flasher is dead. I called a local auto parts store and they have a flasher for $6.99. Before I buy something I possibly do not need, what do you think the problem is? Thank you.

Note: Just got this car two nights ago from trading my 2003 Crown Vic Interceptor with high mileage. The owner (now previous) of this Camaro had his third child and was forced to get something more family oriented. He hated to see his car go, but I'm so glad he was willing to trade.

So anyway I'm new to owning a third gen, but I've always loved them.

Re: Turn signals not flashing.

Welcome and congratulations on the car.
Changing the flasher would be the first thing I would do.
Even though its been a long road I love my Third Gen Camaro and it has become one of the best cars I have ever owned.

Re: Turn signals not flashing.

Thank you for the reply. After looking around under the dash and in Google I cannot find the flasher at all. Is there a picture or diagram somewhere showing its location?

Is that to the right or left under the steering column?

I thought that was for the hazards.

Re: Turn signals not flashing.

I just looked at a convenience center diagram for a 1982 Camaro by typing in 1982 Camaro convenience center then clicking on the image option and a photo of it came right up.
Anyway its the round one on the left hand side, bottom. The round one across from it on the right is for the hazard flashers.
Heres the link = http://www.fixya.com/cars/t4102580-c...2_chevy_camaro
scroll down
Any time I want to see something/anything I just type it in to my Google page search bar and click on Images. You would be surprised at what you can see.

Here is what I see. Not quite what the linked diagram pictures.

Re: Turn signals not flashing.

I thought the flasher plugged into the convenience center was for the hazards. The flasher for the turn signal is clipped to the dashboard next to the convenience center towards the steering column.

Re: Turn signals not flashing.

Yeah I've heard from different people its attached in different spots. Here is what is apparently referred to as the "convenience center". The flasher I got from a store (they looked it up for an 82 Camaro) fits too loosely in the top left 'outlet' in the following picture:

Where else does the flasher go?

Re: Turn signals not flashing.

In your photo, it appears that the black plastic assembly has come apart. Perhaps the contacts are now not in the proper place (dropped down with the base). Can you snap it back together?

Re: Turn signals not flashing.

It may be possible to remove a relay one at a time to see if that has any effect on the signal such as not being there completely. That should narrow down your search. Also look for numbers on the relay. Also look to see which one has only two prongs. The one you're looking for has only two.

Yes good eye. I snapped all the corners and sides back together, gave it a whack or two, and put the convenience center back where it belongs. Now my flashers work! Though they do seem to flash at a barely noticeable unsteady rate. Also there is no "click" sound when it flashes, which is actually pretty nice.

I thought the flasher for the turn signals was supposedly mounted under the dash separate from the convenience center. Apparently not.

PS. This is pretty unrelated, but I don't want to create a new thread for such a trivial question. How do you adjust the clock in the center console?
