'91 Z28 Trunk Latch Problem (Video)
My trunk won't latch. I've read troubleshooting tips but can't seem to pinpoint my problem.
When I push the slide button on the console, I can hear the latch solenoid click. When I manually close the latch with a screwdriver, I can open it by pushing the slide button. However, the latch won't grab a hold of my trunk lid and suck it down.
I've read a hundred times to push the button with your finger, and want to make sure I'm pushing the correct button. If so, what is my problem?
Thanks!

Hatch Catch
If the unit raises but won’t pull down take a look at the two switches in the unit.
One is moved when the hook presses on it.
The other one is a small round one with a spring near it with a tab.
It rotates as the motor operates.
Make sure both function.
The small round one can fall out.
When you push with your finger the catch can’t close.
Now use a pencil, to simulate the metal latch bar on the lid, and push down on the striker (if the striker is in the up position).
You might have to have the Pull-Down unit unbolted from the car so the pencil won’t get interference from the surrounding sheetmetal.
(Having a spare or simulated hook is the fastest way to test these units.)
If the unit is good it will pull down on the pencil.
However if the striker is already in the down position, in the Pull-Down Unit there is a reversing switch that causes it to come up that you can access thru the opening where the latch is with a screwdriver or the pencil.
Can you hear the motor for a few seconds after the *click*?

Re: Hatch Catch
Incredible, thanks for this info! I just solved mine an hour ago, however. Somehow, the two ground wires just below the latch assembly got twisted together. I simply loosened the bolt on one of the ground wires, pulled it away, and retightened it and the latch worked.
I have no idea how they got tied together, but I'm glad I didn't have to replace anything.
