Power Overload, 18v on gauge

My voltage is red lining, Ive replaced the alternator in early December, shortly after my starter went out. Recently Ive noticed surging on my voltage gauge, its not constant. Its reading it the 14-16 range, but it has been close to the red. Tonight it wasstaying in that range "red/17-18v" I havent hooked up a v-meter to it yet. Anyone have any ideas what my problem is? faulty alternator maybe? Electricals not really my thing, is there something that regulates the output from the "ALT"

you think my battery might blow up? Or should I go ahead and call my insurance agent and add fullcoverage with a fire coverage. jk

It was the Alternator. Took it off, went to aZone, they tested it.. it passed.. got a new one anyway.. 2 days now, voltage ok......
