You can do the normal VATS resistor thing, and test each of the 15 possibilities until you get the right one - the resistors are about $1 at Radio Shack, and your time.
Or, you can get a VATS bypass module fromebay, Painless, etc. for about $50, and wire it in per instructions.

the numbers under the bar code are: 86ANTTK192580878
the Caprice computer: SERV. NO. 1228746 APFN

Re: got a new camaro, no key for the VATS
The VATS module is independent of the ECM, so there is no way the Caprice would have worked in your car. He was giving you bad advice. I bet his VATS was already resistor bypassed & he doesn't even know it. And that is why it would have worked on his cars.
All you can do now is start assembling the 15 different resistor values one by one (hopefully yours will be one of the very first values) for the cheap bypass mod, or buy the more expensive bypass module mentioned above. If you had the key, you could measure it & duplicate the value using resistors.
Do the resistor bypass method. You won't regret it.

RC, it is 2 min between each try before the Module resets & can be tried again. Don't wait long enough & it won't have reset itself & you'll still be in the "not correct" cycle & the 2nd one you try can't work, even though it might have been correct.

Re: got a new camaro, no key for the VATS
Oh....The chart in the link I gave you shows direct resistors that will work by using only 1 resistor. You can always just buy an assortment at Radio Shack & daisy chain them to get the value you need.
