LED tail light bulbs?

I'm thinking about replacing all of my tail lights with LEDs. I currently have the 82 Tails in my 92 Firebird. Someone suggested superbrightleds.com -- but I see a ton of options for the standard 1157 bulb. I understand that I'm going to need to get a new flasher, but I'm not sure about a load resistor.

Has anyone used any of their bulbs before? I just want my tail lights to be a lot brighter than they are right now.

Or any other suggestions would be appreciated

Many Thanks!
Brian

Re: LED tail light bulbs?

I don't think LED bulbs will be brighter over the whole area of the tail light, the LED light is too directional. It would probably look like a bright dot. If there was a panel of several LEDs then that would be brighter along with more uniform brightness.

Spaghetti Engineering made or still makes LED panels to install inside of the taillight. However, I don't like how far apart they put the LED's and how few they used.

Re: LED tail light bulbs?

Firebat - Yeah, I've read a lot of tail light reviews using LEDs, and if you don't use the right kind, it will not be any brighter and you'll get that "dot" look. I guess that's why I started asking -- but it seems that they are starting to make multi-directional LEDs, which I suppose would work...

mrrman - I would LOVE to see day and night pics of those you got on ebay!!

As someone else pointed out, a lot of the LED bulbs I've seen appear to be very directional.
There are versions out there which slide into the housing and then open out, kinda like an umbrella. Might be worth investigating?

Yeah I know what you mean. I've seen those type that open out too. But there are some kinds that don't have those umbrella looks but still have leds all the way around -- that's why I want to see the video.

But my stock flasher was replaced with a 552 (I think that's the number) and all of the sudden the stock lights got a lot brighter, so -- it's not as big of an issue now as I once thought it was.

Re: LED tail light bulbs?

I've got a set of these for my brake/tail lights and they do quite well and fill the lens completely - no hot spot of light in the middle. I have some to put in the turn signal locations, but need to wide the opening of the socket to keep the body of the assembly from seating on the edge of the socket so they'll lock in place.

Get ones like these, no modification to the socket needed. Plug and play, just get an electronic flasher...make sure you get bulbs that burn red unless you want hot pink brake lights.

every single light in my car is led and I have zero load resistors. Check the vid in my sig too
