engine rotates too slow???

about 2 weeks i took my car on a 20 minute drive to get my headliner done, it ran and started GREAT, no problems what so ever. well when i went to pick it up then engine just didnt wanna start, well the guy jumped me and it started REALLY slow, 2 slow rotations and it started and i went on my way, well i got home, did some work on the car and went to go start again and it rotated slow again untill nothing, well i put it on a charger and it 2 slow rotations and it started, well i got my tester out, tested my battery and it was good, i tested my alternator and it was good till i put a load on it, it just died and the engine bogged down badly. so i took my alternator out and ran it to zone and hey tested it and it was deader than a doorknob. well i had it rebuilt and i got it back today. i put the battery on charge while i ran to the store and got it and installed it, i got in to start it after i took the charger off and 2 and a half rotations and nothing, put the charger on it and it started after 2 rotations, well i took it around the block, brought it home and parked it and killed it and went to go start it a few minutes later and nothing, dead., so i left it, well i got back home when it was dark and i went to go start it and 1 rotation and nothing but the dome light dims and come back on after i let off the key. well i let it sit for a second and decided to try it again and it rotated slow at first then rotated alitttle quicker for the second rotation then started and idled fine. well i killed it and let it sit for a few seconds then tried it and 1 rotation and nothing, let off the key and it started after 2 rotations so im lost. what is this!??!

Might want to test the battery, too.

Good, then you'll get 4 years pro-rated warranty on it.

Weak alternators can do unfortunate things to batteries, even new ones.

Re: engine rotates too slow???

checked my positive termaial and it was loose so i tightened it, got in and started it after letting it sit for a few seconds and let it idle for about 5 minutes again then shut it off and re started it and its starting and turning over alot faster now so iv got it on the battery charger on it. its still turning over kinda slow but atleast its starting now. ill charge that battery up then go on a nice drive. i know after i got it started the second time my step dad told me to let it idle with the fan on, radio on, and all my lights on( brights) to force the alternator to pump so i did that for about 10 minutes and it seemed to work, its turning over much quicker

Re: engine rotates too slow???

Golden rule here is that batteries kill alternators and alternators kill batteries...

Anyways, I'd go through and disconnect the battery completely while it's charging, and go through and clean up every single connection between it and the starter. Positive cable and neg cable to the battery, neg cable to ground next to the battery, neg cable to engine block, starter housing to engine block (and any and all shims between), and all cables on the positive cable stud on the starter solenoid and the nut as well.

And then don't just let the car run with all accessories on, take it for about a 10 minute drive. The alt puts out very low charge at low speeds, and you don't want to overheat it and burn it out by running it at idle for a long period of time.

Re: engine rotates too slow???

well i dropped it and took it in today to have it rebuilt and after about an hour i got a call from them. apparently the coil went out in it and it was going to take them longer to replace that and the price went from $40 to $70 in a hurry so i had them put it back together and i went and got it. im taking it in to autozone tomorrow to trade it in on another one.

Re: engine rotates too slow???

well i gotta replace that battery anyways, i got my starter today, got it installed and the car starts AMAZING!!!!, took it for a drive down to my grandmas thats maybe 6 blocks away, i was idleing outside while my step dad went inside to talk to her and after a few minutes my radio turned off then turned back on after about half a second, i thought well....ok whatever. well about a minute after that my entire car just shut down on me, i went to restart it and nothin, tried it again and nothin, just happen to glace out my windsheild to my hood and i saw smoke just ROLLING out from under the hood, so i jumped out, popped the hood and just let the smoke roll out, well i got to looking and my negitive battery turn was just melted ALL over the battery tray and everything else. well i looked at my hot wire and it was against the manifold and it fried it.... so time for a new one :/

Re: engine rotates too slow???

the starter and alternator were my problem?, i had to move the hot wire from where i dropped my old starter to take it in as a core and my step dad didnt put the cable back in the notch like it should have been so it wiggled over to the manifold and poof. my car starts and charges great now with the new parts, i have no drag while trying to start that i use to have and before my battery fried my sound system sounded cleaner and no lights dimmed since i had my alternator rewond to 130 amps so it can hold the power better with no problem. that wire will never melt again though , i covered it, i got out my high voltage electrical tape and put to layers on it, then i put on 2 layers of my glass high temp tape on, then another layer of electrical tape. im good forever now lol. time for a new battery

Re: engine rotates too slow???

Ah ok sorry, sounded like you had replaced your starter and alt etc, while the batt cable was shorting to the manifold the whole time. Good job
