Headlights Just Stopped Working :(

I've got an 89 Camaro RS -
Headlights were working just fine when I purchased the car two weeks ago.
The headlights have a toggle switch under the steering column to turn them on/off.
As I was driving yesterday, I went to turn on the headlights, and noticed that the toggle switch wasn't working, and the headlights were not coming on.
I tried to pull on the standard ****.......and I pulled the whole **** off with the rod!!! WTF? lolol
So I really need to figure out why that relay switch just stopped working.
I've checked fuses, they're fine....but wiring??? What a mess.
Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys

The best way to fix the problem is to install a new headlight switch.

Because the old one pulled out inspect the area for damage which might cause the new one to not fit properly.

Hopefully the PO didn’t mess with the wiring to the switch socket.

Anyway after the new switch is installed, if it doesn’t work, we can talk you thru the wiring fix.

Re: Headlights Just Stopped Working :(

The fact that there was a second switch would indicate that the original switch has problems. Start there and try to un-do the hack job wiring that the last owner did. Trying to figure out how and why someone else did what they did can be very frustrating. Good luck. Also, check the dimmer switch, I had one fail that left me with no headlights at all. I did have parking lights and tail lights. So, if your other lights are working, that may be part of your problem. Even if that is the problem, changing the headlight switch should be a priority.

Re: Headlights Just Stopped Working :(

Thanks for the response. The wiring on this car is a disaster.
Everything was working just fine, and the push/pull **** never had to be used for the headlights....just the toggle switch under the steering column. When the toggle switch stopped working and didn't give me headlights/parking lights/dash lights....I was playing around with the push/pull ****, and ended up pulling the **** off.
You still recommend a new headlight switch, even if I never use the standard push/pull ****? Only thing that has turned on the headlights has been the toggle switch.
Blinkers work fine...but that's about it
(((I wish my car didn't have wiring issues....but the entire wiring set-up is ghetto)))
Hope this helps a little...lol !

Re: Headlights Just Stopped Working :(

Did you try crossing the wires that are connected to the toggle switch to see if that does anything. Back to your question about the factory switch, yes I would still replace that.

Re: Headlights Just Stopped Working :(

Just a couple side notes I thought I might add.
The buzzer for the lights being turned "on" no longer works.
Brake lights work, turn signals work, radio works.
No headlights, no parking lights, no dash lights.
I've looked through the archives on here, and I can only come up with two things :
Headlight Switch - OR - Fusible link??
I'm driving to work @ 4am with no headlights....but I'm off work @ 10am...which gives me all day tomorrow to fix it.
Just wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas for a quick fix.
Thanks again guys - wish me luck

Re: Headlights Just Stopped Working :(

So I replaced the headlight switch....and I still have No Headlights, parking lights, dash lights, and no buzzer going off telling me that my lights are still on, when i shut off the car, and open the door. Anything else this could be besides a headlight switch???
My brake lights, and turn signals still work fine.........
(P.S. - when I push up on the fuse box under the dash....i hear random clicking...is this a short somewhere I should be concerned about???)
Thanks in advance!!!

BuMp

Soooo, I traced the wire from the toggle switch, and found a relay that had been burned up. A hot wire had literally been burned through. Replaced the toggle, and wire...hooked it all up.
Nowwww, I have High Beams only. No dash lights. No parking lights.
(at least I still have turn signals, and brake lights)
Any suggestions on what this could be to only give me brights??? When this was hooked up (b4 burning out) all lights worked fine......
weird.
Help?

Shedding Some Light

You should get rid of the PO installed switch and relay.

Then using a voltmeter or test light
(the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the 12 AWG red wire going to the headlight switch.

Is there power there?

If no, check for a bad fusible link near the battery.

If yes, but still no lo-beams, probe the
16 AWG tan wire from the dimmer switch.

When you operate the dimmer switch what does the meter or test light do?

Then probe the
16 AWG light green wire from the dimmer switch.

When you operate the dimmer switch what does the meter or test light do?
