trans am checkered tailights in a formula?

i was changing my tailights because one was cracked, the wrecking yard only had trans am ones so I bought both (I kinda like the checkered ones personaly) anyhow as i removed my original tailights it was clear that the stock formula tailights have 2ea 194 style bulb marker lights in each lens, the trans am does not. Is it as easy as just unpluging them and running without those when I change tail lights or is there more to it? I ask because on the formula the turn signal does not double as a marker light (only comes on with turn signal) and im wondering if on the trans am it should double as a marker light since the turn signal on th trans am is red turn signal (the formula is orange) has anyone done this swap? please help. thanks in advance!

I forgot to mention that the car is an 88 formula 350, the trans am tail light i am not sure what year they are but they take 4 large style bulbs without th 2 markers

Re: trans am checkered tailights in a formula?

thanks drew, i did a search and found out it can be done with a little time and effort, however i also found how so many people are making trans am clones and thats not what i want to do or even make people think thats what i want to do, i just like the tail lights. So im gonna keep it original and return the trans am tail lights and find me a stock one, i have always perffered the formula over the t/a due to the no bs and simple look (the formula 350 badge says it all) and to see that formulas are harder to come by i want to keep mine original

Re: trans am checkered tailights in a formula?

thanks drew, but i just decided today that im gonna make these darn t/a tail lights work since the wrecking yard is closed today (and im impatient...give me 15 minutes without beaing able to return them and im gonna put them on!) any how since i have an 87 formula firebird that is not street legal (yet I left the tail light harness in tact in case i wanted to do that) i cut the 2 filament bulb wiring out of the left side of it (the one with 4 wires 2 blu and 2blk) then I took my original long turn signal single of my 88 with the long socket single element bulb, I wired the wires from one of my original marking lights to it as well as my original blinker wires, now all my lights come on as marker lights when i turn the lights on (except reverse obviously) and my outermost light doubles as the blinker and the 2 center ones double as the brake light, this was easier than I thought! if anyone need help just let me know....there ARE plenty of wrong ways to wire it, I only blew one fuse and figured it out, now for the passenger side

Plenty of people put my STS modules on Formula lights, by modding the wiring. By far, the easiest way is to go back to the yard & unplug the TA harness, come home & plug it in your car.

Re: trans am checkered tailights in a formula?

stephen, I would have but all that was available were the tail lights, the car has long since been to the crusher, I got my lights done and they look great! all light up with marker lights and outsides are turn signal and inners are brake,...HOWEVER, I can never be satisfied, I like how these lights appear "tinted" but I am going to the parts store after work tomorrow and order some relays and some wiring supplies cause I want to be a little different. Heres what Im gonna do> convert all the 3 outter lights to all be turn signal, brake and markers, then install relays to make them like the California style mustang turn signals, this wil make the turn signals going from most inner to the outside blink one after another making a cool effect when signaling......inner flash, mid flash, outter flash,.....pause and repeat

Getting a munch of relays is the hard way. What do you think my Avatar is? (STS=Sequential Turn Signals & taillights on Hazard)

Since then, I've converted my clear Reverse lenses to red & made them part of the taillights too.
