rewiring intank fuel pump

i recently swapped carbs from a q-jet to a holly. in that process i removed a lot of wiring from the engine bay. i removed 6 relays and later found out that one of them is for the intank pump. i have a picture of them in an album in my profile. if someone could point out which one is for the fuel pump that would be great.

my main goal is to rewire the pump so it works without wiring it to the computer. so i started digging for the wires that go to the fuel tank area and this is where im at.

ok, i found 3 wires coming from the fuel tank.

a black one that is grounded below the back seat.
a pink one that im assuming is power
a tan one that might be to the fuel gauge?

would that make sence for a float style fuel gauge?

also would it be possible to rewire this without the relay? i was thinking of connecting the power to the fuse box. anyone have any ideas.

Re: rewiring intank fuel pump

You can wire a simple relay using the original wires. The relay will have the following wires - PPL or GRY is power to the pump, BLK is the ground, ORN is power, and DK/GRN is the signal wire. The simplest way to do this is keep the battery power and run ignition power to the enable wire. Run the FP enable wire to the pump and run the ground wire through a switch, or whatever you want to use.

Also, your intank pump will literally blow the carb seals with gas. It is way too much pressure for a carb without going through a huge pressure decrease. You would be better off pulling the pump and going with mechanical or aftermarket low pressure pump.

the car is a 1987 lg4 car that came factory with 2 pumps. 1 in the tank and 1 on the block.

also, there are only 3 wires coming from the pump. one ground(black) one is pink and the other is tan. does the pump need a relay or can i just connect it to the ignition power on the fuse box?

Re: rewiring intank fuel pump

Do you guys know where the wires run once they go inside at the back seat? Right now my pump is wired to run all the time when the ignition is on but I need to route it so the ECM triggers the relay. The car's been hacked on so I can't even find where the relay is anymore. I also have an '87 that was originally an LG4.

Re: rewiring intank fuel pump

as far as i can tell the wires go through the body behind the back seat and then to the top the the fuel tank. probably where the pickup is at. check and see where your pink and tan wires run to(such as a relay or fuse box) and let me know.

Re: rewiring intank fuel pump

That's the part I'm trying to figure out... where they run to inside the car. Down the right side, or left side? And where they come out.

Re: rewiring intank fuel pump

I THINK it's this one (circled on the driver side firewall, above the c100). My cars harness was hacked, hence my swap to an LT1. This one has the closest colors if i remember right. Even if it isn't this one, the wires run down the passenger side of the car, up threw the fender well.

Re: rewiring intank fuel pump

idk. what i did is this.

i cut the tan wire from the tank right by my clutch pedal. i then bought a simple relay from o'reillys. i mounted the relay right behind the lever that pops the hood open.

i ran a six inch wire from the ignition port in the fuse box to the relay. i connected the cut (tan) wire opposite of the ingition wire.

then i spliced into the power wire from the battery to the computer, (in my case it was an orange wire) using a Y connector. i ran a wire from there through the firewall and to a port on the relay.

then i connected a ground wire opposite of the battery power i just connected.

this seems to work fine. every time i turn on the ignition, the pump starts to flow fuel. i hope this helps.

Re: rewiring intank fuel pump

The wires are routed along the driver rocker panel and connect behind the driver kick panel. The purple (or pink) is the gauge wire, the tan/white is the pump power and the black is ground. The relay will have an orange (battery), green/white (ECM signal), black (ground), and pink (ignition). If there is a red wire, it is most likely a field service enable, which will energize the pump when power is applied directly to the red wire.

Re: rewiring intank fuel pump

hope you can help me I looked at the 86 Camaro wire diagram for fuel relay( A tan/white) wire goes to tan fuel pump wire( B is black wire ground) (C green/white wire is Ignition hot when you turn key on only( D is Orange wire )it goes to ALCL CONNECTOR I spliced this to A7 on red PCM connector (E is thick Orange wire this hot at all times ) I used a test light on E its hot at all times C is hot when you turn key on (A) there nothing I think that when ignition is turn on this should be hot ? cause this is going to fuel pump right ? and (B black )it also hot I was using the old 86 fuel relay and later got new one and its the same thing I doing a lt1 swap into a 86 IROC Z Thanks for your help A B C D E are letters 5 wires on black fuel relay connector
