AAUUUGGGHH! Are you for real??
Alright - My 86 Sport Coupe (the 2.8) the PO lost the keys to it. So after getting all the paperwork squared away (which took forever) I finally go to my local Chevy dealer to get another set of keys made from the vin #. Problem #1 - they can't find the code from the vin. So "no problem! We'll contact GM to get it. shouldn't take too long - just a couple of days." OK yesterday was TWO WEEKS and they called back (Problem #2) saying GM told them THEY couldn't find a code for the keys either!! FOR REAL??? Then they told me to tow it in and they would remove the ignition cylinder and replace as well as the doors & hatch locks... yeah right.. for how much?? I didn't think much of it when the dealer couldn't find the code; but GM?? For Real????

I'd tell them they can replace it all, but at their cost. Since it is GM's fault they can't find the codes they should fix it for free.
If they won't then they are probably trying to scam you and I would take it somewhere else. You can also find a good used set at a junkyard and swap them in yourself or have a good local mechanic do it for fairly cheap.

I put here because of the ignition. Yes; I was wondering if they were just trying to make a buck; so I am going to another dealer tomorrow to see if they can. Someone else told me that the cylinder now has the code stamped on the side; once removed a key can be made... but he wasn't sure what year GM started doing that so it may or may not be on an 86.

I curious, is it really expected for a company (including gm) to continue having products readily available for a 20+ year old car? From what I understand of US legislation, a company is only required to support a specific product 5 years after it's discontinued. Should I expect GM to have a spare set of keys for my 1967 truck? It took about 2 hours of my time and 20 bucks to have the lock cylinders re-keyed (doors and hatch) by a locksmith. New ignition locks are also readily available online. These methods might save you time and headaches to get you car up and running

No I don't expect them to have a key; however we did have computers and servers in 1986 (even microfiche) and code information I would expect to be more readily available than an actual part or key. The main thing for me was the dealer wanting to tow the car and pay for towing, $250 for the ignition plus the doors & hatch.

WOW - just got an email back that GM was trying to call me! They left a phone # and case# for me to call back when I get home from work! That was quick!

Well as it turns out GM only keeps those records for 15 years. So while it was true that they no longer had the code- they couldn't explain why it took the dealer TWO WEEKS to inform me. Guess I'll either be searching salvage yards or e-bay.
