I just took some pictures of an instrument panel I removed from a 1989.
You'll have a spring clip you have to press in towards the panel while you pull the cable out. The cable is not threaded - it's just locked into place by this spring clip. After you do that you'll have to disconnect the tach connection.
I hope this helps you out a little - I'm on the West Coast and I have to hit the sack now - I work graveyard shift. I'll post the pics tommorow before 12:00 noon West Coast time.

I understand what you wrote, so i will wait to see your pics tomorrow i too am on the west coast, need to crash out hella beat, long frustrating day. Hey the Tach connection simply pulls off or does it need some type of tool? there i go again, ill sleep on it. thanks for the heads up.

Odometer cable!
I know the speedo has a cable & its held on by the clip mentioned. You have to pull the cluster far enough away from the dash. Then reach behind the cluster & push that clip. The cable housing will then release. There are no other devices holding the cluster on.Other than the two bottom 10mm nuts.
