What does this wire do?
Hi everybody!
As I was installing my new cd-player in my '87 SC, I decided to remove the center column to clean it up and see how things were. I cleaned up the wiring a bit (cosmeticly speaking as no wires were removed) and discovered a severed phone charger wire and two unconnected wires. The brown wire with the large connector gives 12V+ when I turn on the headlights. As you can see it also has a severed orange wire coming out of it. The other orange wire with the small connector gives 12V+ constant. It was taped to the apparent wirebundle inside the dash.
Both wires look factory original, which means that either something is unplugged and not working properly, something has been modified, or that these are wires for options my car does not have.
Can anyone help me?
Much appreciated.
Dennis

On the back of the OEM stereo's there's a two prong receivor for that plug. It controls the dimming of the stereo's display and constant voltage for memory etc.

Re: What does this wire do?
Watch out, the brown wire carries full 12V with lights on, it's not from the dimmer. Its purpose is to dim the radio lights when your lights are on. It's just an on/off state.
The grey wire is from the dimmer switch and carries a variable voltage, powering the dash lightbulbs etc. That would be the wire to use for newer radios.
But read your radio's documentation first to see which input it requires.
