Am I missing something?
I think I'm missing something to connect to my speedometer. As noted below this is not the stock instrument cluster.
There is a yellow and purple wire that runs from the VSS on the tranny to the passenger dash side. It has a black two prong connector that connects to nothing at the moment. I can't find anything for it to connect to? The yellow buffer box is right there but all the plugs are properly connected. My Haynes manual doesn't say much and the parts man at the dealer wasn't much help either.
Any ideas?
Thanks....
This is a continuation of one of my previous thread "Denso Instrument Cluster"
[3838806]I have a 1987 GTA Trans AM. The previous owner swapped the instrument cluster with a firebird cluster, not sure the year. The speedometer has not worked, however it looks like all the other gauges work. I am at a loss???? Any ideas.. Thanks.[/quote]

Re: Am I missing something?
Unless I read your post wrong that connector should plug directly into the vss connector on the transmission. The other end will feed into your main ecm harness.

Re: Am I missing something?
The connector(black) that plugs into the vss on the transmission side should have a yellow and purple wire. If not then just make sure they go to the same spot on the the yellow buffer box. The yellow wire should run to the c1 connector terminal A. The purple wire should also run to c1 at terminal C. The c1 should be white with only two spaces for pins. There is also a secondary harness that plugs into the yellow speed buffer box. If this doesn't help let us know and we will get your speedo working so you don't get pulled over doing 120mph.

Re: Am I missing something?
Ok here is my guess after thinking about this for awhile. The yellow and purple wire black connector plug into the trans. They run from there to your main bulkhead connector in the firewall underneath the brake booster. You know which one i'm talking about. It is the large square one. Then from there it will go into the interior to your yellow buffer box. It will plug into the two prong slot on your yellow b. box.
Since it seems like someone has already attacked your wiring harness i believe there are two connectors for the same thing on your car. The previous owner knew enough to be dangerous. I'm guessing they bypassed your bulkhead connector and ran a new wire from the trans. to the yellow buffer box. So you still have the old connector plugged into the yellow b. box that runs to the bulkhead connector. He just cut the wires and spliced in his own harness. Thats just a guess but I bet you have two of the same connector now instead of just one at the yellow b. box.

FirehawkSS, thanks for the info and pictures. As they say "pictures are worth a thousand words". I'll look to see if there are any splices.
Would you by chance have a picture of the instrument cluster front and back?
If I get this figured out, I'll owe you a beverage of your choice!
Thanks again!

How much more do you want me to tear into my car? By the way I also have an 87 gta 350 tpi. Well almost. I have an 87 gta 350 tpi engine, trans, and harness in my base model 87. I guess the connector c1 is black not white like my manual states. But you see the exact wires im talking about right. Yellow and purple. It is on the separate connector on the yellow box.
Have you checked your gauges fuse? It should be a 10amp fuse. Test if you are getting power to your gauge cluster. Turn the car on but not running. Put the parking brake on. If the light for the parking brake lights up then you are getting voltage to your cluster.
Does your odometer work? If your odometer works but your speedometer doesn't then the gauge cluster may be crap. I have two if that is the case. Keep sending info this way and someone on here will figure it out.

Re: Am I missing something?
You are the man! The pictures are great.
The wires (yellow & purple) that comes from the VSS to the passenger side don't connect to anything. The wires in the yelow buster are stock and are in the harness.
I ohms tested the VSS wire to be sure thay are correct and it tested good.
The guages work exept the speedo and odo, the oil reads high.
Here are my guages.
I'll keep plugging away thanks for your help...!!!

Can anyone tell me what connects to the other end of the VSS under the passenger side dash?

Re: Am I missing something?
Did some wire chasing through the dash and also figured that the previous owner added a different harness when he redid the wiring under the hood. Your photos and a couple of other websites helped bring it all together. I'm excited to have this one behind me, now on to the AC.

Re: Am I missing something?
im having about the same problem with mine the wires running up to the buffer box are purple and yellow, the yellow wire that i though was broken because it is turned at about a 90 into the vss is the good wire at 0.1 ohms, the purple wire however is ohming at about 20.0 ohms and going up the whole time the ohm test is ran, i sorta skimed over the wiring and there is a purple, yellow, and black wire going into a canister that sort of looks like a capacitor, i dont know if this is where these wire go or not, if someone could please give me a hand i would greatly appreciate it.

Guages work except the tachometer reads high the speedo and odo dont work
Replaced the VSS already, have tested the wiring on the buffer box as apposed to a schematic i was sent to from here, re-removed the vss and inspected the internal drive gear what someone was telling me they can break and sometimes move off of the clip, the drive and driven gears are fine,
if someone could point me in the right direction about the purple wire from the vss up to the buffer box it would maybe get me working.
