motorized trunk broken

so the other day I push the button to open my trunk and the motor continously makes a noise like it does when I open or close it. So when I close the trunk the motor doesnt close the trunk but just keep making this sound, and the trunk is closed just not completely. I ended up having to pull the fuse to stop the noise just so it wouldnt kill my battery. Now when im driving around the trunk is loose and rattles when it gets bumpy. Any ways I can fix the motor or atleast close the trunka ll the way?!?!!?

Re: motorized trunk broken

what happend is the gears inside the assembly have broken, they are plastic and wimpy shich is why alot of them get thrown away. you can strip the whole assembly and get down to the metal brackets and get it welded. best way is to get inside the car shut the trunk crawl in and weld it. this is dangerous though so i might be a problem. if not measure then weld. the assemble is pricey so thats the only other route you can interchange things from older cars its to much work hope that helps

That's not your only route. I sell all the parts to rebuild your motorized pull-down unit. You broke a part called the gear nut. I sell it. I also make new guides which are much stronger than OEM and reinforce the clear plastic motor-housing where they are prone to break with aluminum and epoxy.

Re: motorized trunk broken

You can download either the Tech Article I wrote that is posted on TGO or the instructions for the TDS 101170 aftermarket nylon guides. Those instructions are on the lower left side of my site under "Documentation".

Re: motorized trunk broken

Kwp289, I had the same problem. I also bought the kit from Lon (TDS). It wasn't hard and it works better than new! Just read the instructions first and mark the position with tape before you pull it out! Thanks again Lon! Good Stuff!

Re: motorized trunk broken

this is what i did I was in the same situation.

People sell these hatch pull down assemblies for crazy prices.

I went to the junk yard and pulled three complete assemblies and paid 18 bucks for the lot to build one good pull down assembly.

Mine the hatch slammed down and drove the pull down to the bottom where it kept on going and blew the fuse and cracked the plasitc cover for the gear.

anyways bought a set of hatch struts brand new 60 bucks for the two and changed the pull down asssembly

good luck

Re: motorized trunk broken

bought a set of hatch struts
This is a good tip, if your lift struts are old and tired - that contributed to the motor breaking. Thats a lot of weight if it drops with any sort of force on the assembly.

I don't let my hatch drop at all when I close it, I slowly lower it down until I hear the motor engage and the *click*

Re: motorized trunk broken

You'll have to take a look at, you *might* be able to move it up and down by hand as a quick check. If you can it's worn out and is the gear. But to be sure, you'll have to follow the instruction Lon sent you - they are very good and helped me with mine.
