My car is an 84 Z, L69. I drove last Saturday and all appeared fine. Yesterdayturned the key and the car was dead. Hooked up my NAPA battery charger overnight and this morning it started right up. Except my tachometer is pegged at 7000 and doesn't move at all. I don't know if this is coincidence or not but I sure could use some help diagnosing the tach problem to determine if it is repairable or needs replacement. Battery voltage is 12.56 at rest, 14.33 running so appears to be charging fine. Brown tach wire connection to the distributor is fine. I noticed a capacitor in the wire, could that fail? Appreciate any help telling me how to test or otherwise determine the fix.

check the wire that goes to the distributer it is gray in color and has a gray weather fuse/unhook clip.it at the back of the motor right behind the driver side valve cover.

or take out the cluster and test the tach with a little battery.i change the fuel pump sending unit/it was the gauge.i change the oil pressure sending unit/it was the gauge,i changed the speedo sensor on the trans/it was the gauge.sorry u have an older camaro ur wire colors are diff,most likly it's ur gauge.

Thanks Stevo, appreciate the quick response. You're correct, my wiring is different than what you described. I think it is the gauge too. Anyone else have any suggestions to diagnose??

u will be waiting all nite for someone to help.go to the junk yard and get another gauge clust or ebay with the same miles.junk yard will be cheaper and take the one gauge out the tach gauge and put it in ur cluster see what happens.dont throw ur old one away tho

Stevo, I did as you suggested and picked up another tach at the junkyard today. Put it in and it worked. Just for the heck of it I put the original one back in and it worked too! Not sure why but I'll leave the original in and see what happens. At least I have a working spare it if quits on me again.

make me remember when i had too push my gauges to make work chang one it was good.u prob just had a loose connection gauges are old what can u do?any time man
