RF Relay Switch

Hey guys, had an idea and wanted to run it by you and see if anyone with more experiance could build and/or knock down my idea.

I was thinking about running a kill switch off an RF Relay. I could hide the relay entirely and wouldn't have to reach around for a switch. As long as I keep an extra set of batteries available (or maybe even make a little adapater for the cigarette lighter (which would then almost make it a second key),

I don't really know of any big problems I could have, and that is why I am asking you guys

Thanks,
-Jordan

P.S. Maybe I am just dreaming of the perfect anti-theft solution a little too hard.

Re: RF Relay Switch

I have been tinkering with a similar idea, except I've been thinking of using it for accessory power. IE: I sit down in the car, and acc power is turned on. About the only limitation to RFID tags and readers is the range. I think one possible solution would be to put the reader in the bottom of the seat, and the tag in your wallet.
As for your idea of using it to trigger a starter kill, or fuel pump relay, or ignition, or ECM or yada yada yada (tons of possibilities) it should be pretty straight forward.
Definitely have a backup (sounds like you're already thinking on the right track though) plan ready to go.
As for the "perfect anti-theft solution" the simple act of letting people (potential thieves) know the vehicle is protected is one of the best ways to save costly damage, or theft. An alarm sticker, like the ones that come with any alarm, on the side windows, near the door handles, will deter most. Any thief is simply going to see if the vehicle is unlocked first thing. Don't get some cheap alarm sticker though, use something well known and trusted like viper or clifford. Another sign is the flashing LED light. Pretty well lets them know what's up, (just in case the dirtbag can't read...). I like putting them right behind the glass, in the same place as I described for the stickers. That way, if they were too stupid to bring a flashlight, they would see the alarm sticker being flashed on both sides of the vehicle.
Of course, these are not the only measures you should take to secure your vehicle, but they will certainly help to deter a thief.

Re: RF Relay Switch

I like your enthusiasm. Have you heard of anyone having any success before with this? (or any huge problems?)

Not that I can think of right off the top of my head. But then again, I don't think a lot of people have started incorporating RFID into their vehicles, not as far as customization, yet...
I do know some places use it to automate toll booths, and some for security access.
You can do a google search for "rfid starter kill" and read a few stories on it.
Most are the same as we have here (guy asks if it's possible, other guys give benefits and drawbacks).

Re: RF Relay Switch

Thanks for the info, I am going to do some heavy research into it. If I end up doing it, I will be sure to make a nice post with everything that went wrong.
