wiring diagrams for 84 T.A

Hey all i have 2 questions that i need help on.
I am begining a full teardown reso on my 84 T.A in the next 2 weeks and i want to make a custom wiring harnes since i don't use the CC components.

1: Dose anyone here have any detaled wiring diagrams that they cam E-mail me?
I want to make my car as neat and tidy as posible and the hacked up (rats nest) looms my car currently has are a discusting sight.

2: I have 2 vacuum diaphragms on my RHS (Aus drivers side) and i was told they controll my TTC lock up, My question is would they go to the computer or directly to the trans?
Basicly will I still need the computer with these vacuum diaphragms in place or can I scrap the computer?

Thanks for any help. Steve

Re: wiring diagrams for 84 T.A

the ECM controls the TCC

no ECM= no TCC

usually the TCC system incorporates vacuum-electro switche(s) yesi know it does on the trucks,

the cars im really not sure if they all did, i dont see any on cars very often for some reason

got pics ?

i have a book that has all the wiring diagrams for firebirds all the third gen years, it is split up by years, since minor changes were often seen in wiring on these

have pages upon pages of diagrams

good luck

Re: wiring diagrams for 84 T.A

This was at the top of the page
(Note: All diagrams taken from 85 GM Service Manual)
and it was from a camaro.

I don't know if that is the same as mine.

But thanks I may find some handy stuff on there, Ill have a good look later.

I also know of the www.Austinthirdgen.org but It dose not go into asmutch detail as I need, Im gutting the whole wiring loom and want to remove every single wire I don't need and remove the computer if posible.

Good point. I never actually doublechecked what year it is from. I didn't post the schematics but you can contact the owner of the site and ask. I'd think that majority of them would apply.

Yes, on AustinThirdGen, we have a lot of schematics. Some of them we linked from other sites but the detailed 90+ schematics are from my own repair manual. They are very good because they show every connector and pin designation. Unfortunatelly, they are not for the year you're looking for.

That circular looking thing with the vacuum hose sticking out of the top looks like the vacuum switch that is used to energize the hood air intake solenoid on my car when it senses low vacuum. I noticed your car does not have the power bulge hood anymore so I'm not sure what else it could be used for.

Re: wiring diagrams for 84 T.A

Hey thanks Jaimegmr I will have a good look through it tonight, I have no clue what that round one goes to at the moment I guess ill findout when I pull the engine and have a close look at the hacked up wiring that looks to be cramed down betwene the engine and firewall.
The engine bays wiring will be the first job I start on once the engine is out.

I just had a quick look at one of the "84TA_Wiring_Diagrams" It looks like the kind of thing I needed, Thanks again.

I have an 84 trans am. It had no ecm at all, but if you follow the wires that go through the fender in through the kick panel it will have wires hooked up for your torque converter . This harness coming out to the engine bay and down to your tranny will split up and a few wires will run to a solenoid on the firewall that is actually hooked up to vacuum to send a signal to lock up converter. This is what I found with my set up and no ecm. What I did was eliminated the vacuum swith all together. I went in under the dash and looked at the plug where the green wire hooks to the plug. I found no power to this wire at all with car turned on and even running. I was told that the vacuum switch will give me power when needed. So I looked at the plug in itself, under the dash where the ecm would have been located if they used one and there are alot of wires in this harness that are not used at all. I found that the wire next to it not going anywhere had power when the car was running , so I just took the plug apart and switched the wires so it would give my green wire power all the time. With my tranny it is set up to only lock up in forth gear with a pressure switch on the gear itself. So you can supply power to it all the time. I have read places that some from factory were set up this way too. This is probaly what one of your vacuum switches is for .

Also I had a hard problem and never found a wiring diagram for these cars without ecm.

Re: wiring diagrams for 84 T.A

The large vacuum diaphragm didn't have vacuum going to it when i put my Holley on coz i didn't have enough vac ports but since I have no heater/aircon installed I used the main vac line from the back of the intake manifold to supply vacuum to the switch.

I have heard that if it is locked up all the time it will burnout the trans, how did you set it up to lock up in 4th only?

Re: wiring diagrams for 84 T.A

The thing is my tranny was built by performabuilt and has a pressure switch and is suppose to have power to it all the time. The pressure switch is installed on the 4th gear. So when it goes into 4th gear it will lock up then and only then. I do not use the vacuum switch at all now. Now with that vaccuum switch, I don't know wether it should be direct vacuum or ported vacuum.
