pop up headlights(82 TA)
ok heres the deal. both headlights work but the harness to the motors are cut. i need to know how to wire them to the motors without the quick disconnect jumper. i found the autozone schematic but im still confused. can somebody help me please. it would be nice to have pop up headlights instead of hand cranking them.
*EDIT*
Ok well i found that connecting the black wire to the green wire grounds the circuit and starts the motor. then it doesnt shut off.
when i connect the red wire to the gray wire it moves faster.
when i connect the pink wire to the gray wire it goes slower. then it still doesnt shut off.
the only time it stays off is when the pink wire is disconnected. when the lights are on.
when i shut them off it goes fast again like its closing them but doesnt stop.
so far i think after looking at the diagram from autozone, i may be missing a relay of some sort that goes in between the motor and wire harness. im getting frustrated now with it. somebody help me please.......

Re: pop up headlights(82 TA)
Not sure about the wiring but, i believe the motors will continue to run until the linkages hit the stops. If you do not have the motors connected to the linkages, this may be why they're not stopping for you.

Re: pop up headlights(82 TA)
can you elaborate more on this, do the stops have a switch of some sort or relay built in that shuts the motors off. i know of the stops but they will continue to rotate. and isnt there a reverse for the motors? or do they only spin one direction? sorry about all the questions, i know its annoying.

Re: pop up headlights(82 TA)
hi i have an 82 but i dont have one color of wire connecting to another color of wire
i dont understand why you do
82 and 83 are different than later years also
so if youre trying to put 84 up motors in the car then it wont work
the two systems are wired completely different
and different motors anyways
i can look on my 82 if you need to knwo something specific ?
doy ou still have the relay on the back side of the pass side rad support by the battery ?
the wires on pass side are
white stripe single connector
black
pink
red white stripe
driver side
orange single single connector
black
pink
red white strip
the black wires are attached by a ground screw up under the top lip on the back side of the rad support,
both sides of car

*quick update*
well i found the relay and grounded the black wires and hooked up the motors with some jumper wires i have and there still a no go. i can hear the relay click but no actuator is moving. so i called the local auto parts store and its 15 bucks for a new relay. should i give it a shot with a new relay?

Re: pop up headlights(82 TA)
hi there thats cool no prob
ok i just noticed i messed up on the pass side wire colors in the reply above
theres no red
but everything else is right
i deleted the red from the above reply
lol
i forgot to delete that on an edit session
ok the green and gray are by themselves and they dont go with any other wires or colors,
they run from their own spades on the relay on the pass side motor and into the motor itself, all on pass side of course
the spades on the relay that the green and gray wires plug onto are opposite of the aforementioned wire colors(in above reply)
this relay is mounted to the motor housing itself and is the other one in headlight system
ill take some pics in a bit
i should have the wiring diagrams too that i could always scan
but with a system like this it would be kinda hard to follow
i like your wheels and tires
can you tell me the brand of wheels and tires and what backspacing on the rims and what width ?
also do those wheels fit tight on the center round hubs ?
or are the holes bigger than the hubs ?
looks really good on the 82, better than directionals even, in which i had on mine when i got it, but i got rid of them

Re: pop up headlights(82 TA)
the wheels are some mag truck wheels i picked up at the local wrecking yard for a little change. they are american racing outlaw2's. i believe the backspacing is around 3.5 inches or 3.75 inches. i rub just a tad on the frontbut no biggy i just dont turn that sharp anymore. i love the stance and the ride. im searching for some different style rims though. i want some corvette rallys with a 10 inch wide rim in the rear and a 5 inch in the front. 15's of course. im more than willing to sell these rims. not so sure about the tires since they are brand new. but negotiable. but yeah i may even take a trip the the wrecking yard again to pick a few relays out from the birds there. we'll see. thanks for your help.

and here is between the battery and the radiator on the backside of the rad support, the relay and ground wire with screw:

as you can see theres yellow and white wires and stuff to that relay
they run into a harness i dont know where they go
can see the pics here, and descriptions too:

Re: pop up headlights(82 TA)
neat
if you were to sell them then lemme know how much if you could mail them to 62656
i usually stack two separated by a sheet of cardboard in two separate boxes and mail them fed ex ground 2-3 day
not too bad that way
if theres an 82 or 83 bird in a yard there then i could really use the plastic brackett hat holds the courtesy and turn signal flashers and horn and window relays and stuff under the dash on driver side close to where the ALDL codes connector mounts down there(my ALDL connector wires are cut off in the pic)

Re: pop up headlights(82 TA)
Early Birds had 2 seperate motor relays, later Birds (like my 87) have 2 relays, but built into 1 box on the firewall.

Re: pop up headlights(82 TA)
oh ok i didnt know that about the relays on the later years ones
thats cool
i always assumed it was just one relay on them
neat
yes the 82 and 83 have two relays
one is mounted on the pass side motor and the other on next to the battery
my pics show both of them
the wiring is pretty simple for the most part
i wish you could take pics of how much youre missing though
so i have an idea
what wirign is cut on yours exactly ?
just the relays and motors plugs/wiring ?
or the headlight bulb ones too ??
for the motors and relays there are six plugs altogether
the single wire one on both motors(orange driver side, and white black stripe pass side) equals two separate plugs of course
and both relays get two separate plugs
but the relay on the pass side motor only has one plug that has wires that go to the main front harness(red with white, orange, pink)
the other plug on this relay is the one with the green and gray wires going straight to the motor itself
good luck
