Push button start
Ok guys well my car wont start... The ignition on/off isnt getting to the starter... My dads friend that was looking at the car said he could wire up a push button switch to start the car... I said hell yeah, but he couldnt do it today... So i want to try it myself... I have the wiring diagrams from the Haynes manual but i need help. Ok so i look under my column to see all the wires... Which wires do i tap into so i can start my car with a button ?
Also will a horn button work for the application ?
BTW its a 1985 Camaro Z28

Re: Push button start
my 85 IROC is having the same problem. I think it is a fusible link down by the starter. I have a toggle switch wired up to mine, but i dont really like it and plan on correcting it when I drop in the new tranny (700R4).
oh, BTW...I wired it up directly to the starter with an inline fuse and a relay. I didnt realy mess with the wires under the column...seems to me that if your not getting getting power to the starter that it still wont get to the starter if you tap into some wires under the column with a switch or button...but I could be WAY off.

Re: Push button start
I wired mine up directly to the starter also. I put a momentary on/off push button in place of the cigarette lighter. Def. a plus

Re: Push button start
I didnt use a relay or fuse or anything. I've had mine in it for about 2 and a half years now and no problem yet. I used like 12 or 10 gauge wire though

Re: Push button start
it you want to save the headack of running a wire to the starter all you have to do is drop the fuse box look for the heavy gauge purple wire and send 12V to it. this wire goes right to the starter. it bypass the nutrol safty and all that other ****

Re: Push button start
hey guys i have a quick question. ive been having problems with my starter as well. it starts fine in mornings and stuff but then when i start it after it sits in the sun for about a few hours it wont start. so i was woundering if this was similar to you problems? and if its the vats. (btw the starter is a couple months old nib from auto store)my dad claims the vats is setting it off.i thought i might ack some opinions. and does anone have a diagram for a direct link to starter/toggle or push button? and could i run it threw the vats so it will only be enabled wit the key in the ignition?

Re: Push button start
if you want to run the switch from the fuse box just power one side of the crank fuse ffrom the back of the box, it should be a 3 amp purple fuse. this wire go right to the starter.

Re: Push button start
I am putting a push button start in my 1991 camaro rs I am just learning how to do this type of stuff so any input is good.......we didn't get the keys for the car when I bought it I got it at an auction so we bypassed vats but what all do I need to have a push button start I have read about different toggle switchs to one I don't want to use the keys to turn the ignition on so what do I need to do to make this work.
