what painless wiring kit?
i started this project a few years ago and now am making a return to working on my 91 z. i have made a god awful mess with my wiring i took the dash out and have a custom dash. i am wanting to cut all that mess out of there and rewire the car to have the neccessities such as wipers, horn, headlight, brake lights...etc just good enough where it would pass visual inspection. as for the engine i already have the dfi gen 7 and am not too worried about the wiring for that. i just need some advice on what to do should i just yanked them all out and start from stratch with painless wiring kit. i have some wiring experience i do soldering and heat shrink wrap on all connections and intend to do it the right way. i have the car stripped out to install a roll cage so that should make it easier to do the wiring. any advice would be greatly appreciated !

I did all that too. I had my car down to the shell and after I installed the roll bars, I wanted to wire from scratch. So I did what you sugested. I tried the normal front mounted system that they have for hotrods. Not bad, but I soon learned that I had installed it a bit wrong and that I needed to start over!!!!!!!!
So anyways, by then painless had come out with a new kit that you can install in the trunk. I thought that was pretty cool, so I got one of those, and this time I read the instructions and soldered and heat wrapped it all. Now my 91 Z is fully wired, it all works and it has all the bumble of stuff in the trunk. Great way to clean up the area under a custom dash. I made my guage panel from sctrach. Go to my CD site if you wanna see pics of the whole thing going in. Wasn't that bad now that I look back on it. It was the first thing I had ever wired in my whole life, and all by myself.
Hope this helped. Lemme know if you got more Qs.

painless wiring is good.. i would seperate the front wiring from the back, group your wires to where they will be going.. make sure and double check what you are doing.. i used electric tape to wrap the wires.. took a long time but its nice when done.. for the long travel, use small zipties every couple feet or so.. this will keep the wires tight and in order when you go to wrap them..
if i could do it again, i would probably go for the trunk mounted one.. you wont have to bend yourself to get to the fusebox..
