Problem with calibrating LM-1

I got out my WBO2 meter for the first time. When I went thru the calibrate procedure described in the quick start guide, the meter got stuck on making one calibration pass after another. This meter went about 45 minutes like this. I finally gave up, and turned it off.

It never got to the "Calibration needed".

What is wrong?

I would pull the battery from the LM1, reinstall and then attach it to an O2 sensor in free air (not mounted in the exhaust). That should reset everyting.
