Radio Compatability
TGO Guys,
My son Derek wants to install a new Radio "w/CD" in his '82 Z-28. I offered to purchase a new radio/CD for him but only if it was an Original GM/Delco unit. I want to maintain a "Stockish" look and I hope the OEM Radios "Should Be?" a Plug-&-Play type exchange.
I have seen several newer Camaro Radio/CD Combos on E-Bay. There are also many other varieties of GM Radios some which OBVIOUSLY will not fit. Most of the seller's photos & descriptions are rather poor.
Will a newer Camaro (4th Gen) radio fit properly into this early 3rd Gen? I also noticed that some of the newer Firebird Radios have "PONTIAC" printed on them, I don't want that in his camaro. What other GM Vehicles have a radio the same size?
I have about a month+ before his birthday
I want to start looking for the right item now. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Kurt
I have little experience with the 4th Gen...... Will they fit?

There's a how-to on the car audio forum for putting a newer Delco into a thirdgen. It's basically just a matter of buying a couple wiring adapters and wiring it up properly, since the newer decks use a different style plug than your 82 does. Physically it'll fit fine, though you may need to fab a mounting bar or something simple. There are a few guys that have done the swap, so you should be able to get all the info you need.
When you're looking for a unit, try to get one out of a late 4th gen, truck, or other GM that came with the speed-sensitive volume. This won't work in your car, but those radios are well built units with far better quality and reliability than the prior Delcos.

Classic Industries has a stock-looking radio that works with a trunk CD changer, which they also sell. The only real difference in that radio and the original stock (so far) seems to be that it has CD controls printed on it.
