auto dim mirror question

Do you need signal from the back-up switch(manual trans) in order for the auto-dim rearview mirror to work? The mirror lights up, but doesn't move, does that mean the mirror is junk?

Transmission: T-5 (Non-WC)

IIRC, the mirror is hooked up to the back up lights.

You can forget the disable wire going to the backup switch.Leave it unhooked. It should function just fine without it.All you need is power and ground. The main power lead goes directly to the switch. The main ground will go to alot of places(if you take it apart to look)and the main disable trigger wire I think just goes to one tiny resistor.Forget that wire leave it open.It should work perfectly.Mine has for quite a few years. You might need to relube the worm gears and replace the old dried out drive belts. While you have it apart clean the little windows for the two photo-sensors.Good luck. It's a ridiculously overcomplicated mechanism, but damned if it doesn't work like a charm,it seems to know right when to switch back and forth.Just don't get so amazed watching it do it's stuff that you get into an accident.

I have 2 auto dimming mirrors. One is the older style but I don't have the wiring harness for it.Anyone have an idea where to get one?The second mirror is a later style with an of-min-max switch on the button.I have the harness for this one.It goes to a 3 wire plug(solid green-solid black-light purple w/black stripe).I'm ssuming the black is ground but which would be power the solid green or the purple/black stripe. Also one would go to the reverse switch but tagta89 said that isn't neccessary for the mirrior to function. It just won't un-dim/turn off when you go shift into reverse('83 Z28 auto).
