swap questions

maybe this post will be more clear than my previous attempt, I have an 85 tpi setup in a 90 rs(came as a 3.1 car). I'm using the 85 ECM can i use this vss (the top circled one) with my computer? I know the 85 uses a optical vss but since the 90 cluster uses the electric speedo I'm tryin to make this work as simply as possible. Is the output of this vss compatible with the 85 ECM directly or does it need to go thru a buffer? Does the 90 have a buffer?

if you are using a 700R4, just get a regular speedogear housing and use that. I dont think the 85 ECM was setup to use a VSS.

HI,
Correction.
All thirdgens used VSS. The mechnical speedometer has the VSS sensor on the back side of it. The electornic speedometer has the VSS at the transmission.

Hi,
On the electronic speedometer cars, there is a VSS buffer. I believe that VSS buffer provides the interface for the optical VSS sensor. So there may be drifferent types of VSS buffers dependent on the type of VSS sensor.

Car: 85 Berlinetta
Engine: sort of working
Transmission: B&M 700R4
This is kinda late but...

Is the '90 speedo gauge digital? I've got some experience with the problems of having digital speedo since I have an 85 Berlinetta. The top speed sensot you showed is like the one I have. It's something like 44 pulses/rev and needs the buffer box (yellow box under driver's side dash) for a digital speedo to interface properly with the ECM and gauge. The bottom sensor looks like the one that came with my new B&M tranny. They said it was for "electric speedos" Didn't work with my 85 digital because it output like 4x too many pulses/rev and showed that I was doing 80 idling! I had to use my old tranny tailhousing and speed sensor to make everything work.

Hope this helps some & I can get you more exact pulse numbers if needed.
