car died

My car died today while I was driving. And I mean died. I wasn't even able to turn on the hazzards there was no power.

I checked the connections to the battery there fine.

If the alternator died would that cause it? What else would cause the car to die?

The guges stopped working a week ago and I didn't drive it again untill today.

Check your fusible links down at the starter solenoid.

Was it just the gauges or more than one accessory. It's very possible it's the fusible links. Those looks just like a piece of wire and i believe they are red. They come off the starter if you dont know where to look. Sometimes if this is the problem that all you have to do is look at them, but A good old ohm meter will tell you for sure you should get very low to no resitance.

Is it the part of the wire from the battery to the starter?

NO. It runs off the solenoid to accesories and other things involved with starting. I believe there is two on are car's im not sure how they do it with the different years and engine's.

The fusable links would cause the gauges to go but what about the car turning off completely?

it could be your alternator, when mine went, the few days before anything electronical like the radio and gauges were acting goofy as the alternator couldn't keep up with power demands.

If the alternator is bad would that keep power from getting to the rest of the car?

The batter is fine and is fully charged.

What would keep power from getting to the car?

Fusible links, They are the small wires attached to the starter solenoid on the same terminal post as the wire from the battery. Check them for proper connection, corrosion, shorting out anywhere, & being blown. You can check them for being blown by gently pulling on them, if they stretch they are bad.
